한국어에서 연결어미는 문장 확장의 주요 기제로, 이에 관해 오랜 기간 다방면에서 수많은 연구들이 축적되어 왔다. 본고에서는 현대 한국어 연결어미 연구를 크게 형태와 통사, 의미, 사용의 네 영역으로 나누어, 각 영역의 주요 논제들을 중심으로 관련 논의들을 검토하고 남은 과제들을 제시하고자 하였다. 연결어미의 형태와 관련해서는 복합어미의 판별과 목록에 관한 논의들을 검토하고, 연결어미의 통사와 관련해서는 오랜 기간 논쟁의 대상이 되어 온 연결어미가 결합한 절의 지위, 즉 접속절과 부사절의 문제에 관한 논의들을 살펴본다. 연결어미의 의미와 관련해서는 의미 체계, 의미 범주에 대한 논의들과 함께 의미 확장의 문제와 의미 기술의 메타언어에 대한 논의들을 검토한다. 아울러 연결어미의 관계 의미 외의 의미라 할 수 있는 상적 의미와 양태적 의미에 관한 논의들도 살펴본다. 연결어미의 사용과 관련해서는 실제 자료 분석 결과를 토대로 하여 연결어미의 사용역별 사용 양상을 분석한 논의들을 검토한다.
The goal of this research was to review achievements of research on connective endings in Modern Korean and to suggest topics for future research. In order to accomplish this goal, this paper analyzed connective ending research in four areas of morphology, syntax, semantics, and usage. First, research on distinguishing compound endings and making their list is analyzed with regard to morphology of connective endings. Second, research on grammatical status of clauses with connective endings is analyzed with regard to syntax of connective endings. The issue whether the clauses are conjoined or embedded has long been the subject of controversy. Third, research on semantic system and semantic category of connective endings is analyzed with regard to semantics of connective endings. Research on meaning extension of connective endings and research on metalanguage used in describing meanings of connective endings are also analyzed. Aspect and modality of connective endings was another research topic which was need to be analyzed. Finally, research on usage of connective endings by register which is based on large-scale data analysis is analyzed with regard to usage of connective endings.
