6·25전쟁에 대한 연구는 남침, 낙동강방어, 인천상륙작전과 북진, 중공군의 참전과 후퇴, 공세와 반격, 휴전회담과 고지전 등에 집중되어 있다. 이 글에서는 후방에서 이루어진 후방지역작전에 주목했으며, 공군과 공군력이라는 시각에서 6·25전쟁을 다시 읽어보고자 했다. 글의 구성은 6·25전쟁기 전선이 고착화되면서 시작된 빨치산 토벌작전을 정리하고, 6·25전쟁기 한국 공군의 빨치산 토벌에 대한 항공작전을 시기별로 검토했다. 마지막으로 후방지역이었던 지리산의 빨치산 토벌작전을 공군의 항공작전 측면에서 분석하여 항공력의 성격과 한국 공군의 전쟁환경에서 빨치산 토벌 항공작전이 가지는 역사성과 군사사적 의미를 밝혔다. 지리산 토벌작전은 미 공군으로부터 한국 공군이 단독작전의 능력을 검증 받는 실전 작전이었다. 작전준비태세겸열을 통과하여 이후 강릉비행장을 전초기지로 단독출격작전을 수행하는 기회가 되었다. 전쟁기간 중 최초로 미 공군의 통제가 아닌 한국 공군의 단독 항공작전이었다는 점에서도 의미가 크다.
Studies of the Korean War have focused on the South Korean invasion, the defense of the Nakdong River, the Incheon landings and the North Korean advance, the entry and retreat of the ROK Army, the offensive and counteroffensive, the armistice talks, and the high-altitude warfare. This article focuses on the rear area operations in the rear and attempts to re-read the Korean War from the perspective of airpower and air power. This article is organized to summarize the operations against the Red Army that began as the front lines stabilized during the 6-25 War, and to review the ROK Air Force's air operations against the Red Army during the 6-25 War by period. Finally, it analyzes the ROK Air Force's air operations against the Red Army in Jirisan, a rear area. Through this, the nature of the airpower and the historical and military significance of the air campaign against the Reds in the ROK Air Force's wartime environment were revealed. Operation Jirisan was an actual operation in which the ROK Air Force was verified by the U.S. Air Force for its ability to operate alone. It was an opportunity for the ROK Air Force to pass the Operational Readiness Test and later conduct solo sorties from Gangneung Airfield as an outpost. It was also significant in that it was the first ROK Air Force air operation during the war that was not controlled by the US Air Force.
