조선초기 대일외교의 현안은 왜구 문제와 通交倭人에 대한 통제였다. 이예는 外交使行을 토대로 대일외교의 현안을 해결하고 일본과 우호적인 외교관계를 형성하고 유지하는데 큰 역할을 하였다. 이예에 대한 연구는 1987년에 처음으로 행해진 이후 최근까지 총 26편의 논문과 著述이 간행되었다. 시기적으로는 2001년부터 2010년까지 10년간에 연구가 집중되었으며, 주로 이예의 대일교섭 활동에 대한 논저들이 많았다. 그러나 그 이후에는 연구가 급격히 감소하였지만, 연구 주제가 다양화되는 경향이 나타났다. 이예 연구의 문제점과 앞으로의 과제를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 연구 자료의 한계성을 극복하기 위해서는 개인의 문집에 수록된 이예 관련 내용의 정리와 더불어 門中이나 지역사회에 남아있는 古文書, 古文獻 자료의 조사와 정리가 필요하다. 둘째, 연구 주제를 다양화할 필요성이 있다. 셋째, 이예가 대일사행을 통해서 어떻게 왜인들과 人的 네트워크를 구축하면서 대일 관련 정보를 획득하고, 그 정보를 대일정책에 활용하였는지를 살펴 볼 필요가 있다. 넷째, 이예의 연구를 활성화하기 위해서는 이벤트성 행사보다는 지속성이 있는 행사가 필요하며, 이예를 널리 알릴 수 있는 방안을 강구할 필요성이 있다.
In the early Joseon Dynasty, the problem of Japanese pirates and controlling the tonggyowaein(通交倭人, Japanese people working in trade and commerce) were the top diplomatic concerns in the country. Lee Ye was a diplomat who played a major role in resolving diplomatic issues with Japan by sending envoys and forming and maintaining amicable relationships. Since its beginning in 1987, research on Lee Ye continues today, with 26 academic papers and articles. These studies, most of which were published between 2001 and 2010, focus mainly on Lee Ye’s negotiation activities with Japan. Since then, the number of publications has dropped while the research topics have become more diversified. The problems with the existing literature on Lee Ye and the direction of future studies can be summarized as follows. First, considering the limited number of research resources at present, it is necessary to summarize Lee Ye-related texts contained in individual literary works as well as investigate and summarize the ancient writings and documents that are currently held by clans and local communities in Korea. Second, the research topics need to be diversified. Third, future studies should investigate how Lee Ye established a human network with Japanese people and obtained Japan-related information through his envoys, and then how the acquired information was used to inform Joseon’s Japan policies. Fourth, continuing events, rather than a one-time event, should be planned to promote more research on Lee Ye, and it is also necessary to find ways to encourage more people to learn about him.
