The purpose of this study is to examine the similarity effect on the semantic extension of two constructions, namely ‘-mye/myense’ and ‘-tako.’ To achieve this goal, we first investigated the polysemous features of the ‘-mye/myense’ and ‘-tako’ constructions and then examined the point at which the meanings of these constructions overlap. Subsequently, we pointed out that such semantic overlap is a result of semantic extension, and we proposed communicative needs as a motivating factor for this extension. Finally, we explained the possible mechanisms of the semantic extension, attributing it to structural and semantic similarities. This study contributes to the relevant area by providing a case study of the potential similarity effect on the semantic extension of a construction.
