본고는 도마리아라는 낯선 여성선교사의 활동과 그 의의를 탐구하는 글이다. 그는 동양선교회에서 조선캐나다장로교회 선교부로 자리를 옮겨 원산, 성진, 회령, 용정 등지에서 복음사역자로 활동하였으며 여전도회와 여전도총회에서 지도자로 활동하였다. 필자는 도마리아 선교사의 발굴을 두 가지의 의의로 정리한다. 그는 성결 운동의 후예로서 함경북도 지역의 여성들에게 성결의 복음을 전했다. 이 복음을 전해들은 여성들이 교회여성이 되어 여전도회를 결성했으므로 ‘적어도’ 함경북도의 교회여성들에게는 다채롭고 풍성한 복음이 담긴 교회사와 선교의 역사가 있었음에 틀림없다. 또한 도마리아가 남긴 몇 편의 글들은 함북 지역 여전도회와 초기 여전도총회에 대하여 드러나지 않은 역사를 우리에게 전해주는 귀한 자료이다. 교회여성의 공적인 역량을 강화하기 위해 기울인 구체적 인 노력, 일제강점기 말기에도 꾸준히 이어진 교회여성들의 활동이 생생하게 드러나 있다. 북한의 함경북도 지역에 복음 전파를 위해 노력했던 교회여성들의 살아있는 역사가 있었다는 것을 우리는 도마리아의 섬세한 글을 통하여 깨닫게 된다.
Mary Thomas is a forgotten missionary. After moving from the Oriental Missionary Society to the Korea Mission of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, she worked as an evangelistic worker in North Hamkyong Province (NHP) and as the President of the General Board of Women’s Missionary Society (WMS). Mary Thomas is characterized as follows. First, as a descendant of the Holiness Movement, she preached the Fourfold Gospel to women. The listeners formed the WMS, and they must have had a rich church and missionary h istory. Second, Mary’s writings a re v alu able materials r evealing the history of the WMS in the NHP and the early history of the General Board of WMS. They made a special effort to strengthen the public power of churchwomen and the activities of churchwomen that continued until the end of the Japanese occupation. We found “a living history” of churchwomen who tried to propagate the Gospel in North Korea.
