Kunsan 3.5 Independence Movement and Youngmyung Mission School

군산 3.5 만세운동은 전북지역 최초의 독립 만세운동으로써 다른 지역 만세운동을 촉발시키는 계기가 되었다. 당시 미국남장로회는 군산, 전주, 익산에 기독교 학교를 세웠는데 이들 지역의 만세운동에는 이 학교의 학생들이 그 중심에 있었다. 그 대표적인 사례가 군산영명학교이다. 이 학교는 전킨 선교사가 설립하여 앞선 신학문과 기독교 정신을 가르쳤고, 3.5 만세운동 당시 교장이었던 인돈 선교사는 미국으로 건너가 한국의 독립만세운동의 정당성을 적극적으로 알렸으며, 영명학교 졸업생이자 교사인 박영세는 3.5 만세운동을 주도했다. 이들은 학생들에게 나라 사랑과 비폭력평화의 기독교 정신을 가르쳤고, 학생들은 3.5 만세운동에서 배움을 실천으로 옮겼다. 3.5 만세운동과 그 정신은 그 후 군산지역의 자발적인 만세운동으로 계속 이어졌다.

This paper studied the relationship between Kunsan 3.5 Independence Movement and Youngmyung mission school. Kunsan 3.5 Independence Movement was the first independence movement in North Jeolla province and was an occasion to spark it in other regions. At that time, Southern Presbyterian church in USA established mission schools in Kunsan, Jeonju, and Iksan, where students were at the center of the movement. Kunsan Youngmyung school was a case in point. The founder, Junkin, taught Christianity to his students, and Linton, who was the principal at the time, returned to his home and actively informed the legitimacy of Korea’s Independence Movement. Park Yeon-se, a graduate and teacher at Yeongmyung school, led the 3.5 Independence Movement. Students practiced his learning in the 3.5 Independence Movement. The movement and its spirit continued with the spontaneous independence movement in the Kunsan region thereafter.
