This article focuses on the importance of "cultivating word consciousness" in enhancing lexical competence, and examines the current state of vocabulary education and proposes improvement plans from the perspective of cultivating word consciousness. In Chapter 2, after reviewing the curriculum, two improvement plans are suggested. Firstly, the curriculum should explicitly address word consciousness and 'awareness of words' should also be emphasized and word consciousness should be addressed both in middle and high school. Secondly, five approaches to cultivating word consciousness are presented. In Chapter 3, after examining wordplay education, three improvement plans are proposed. Firstly, curriculum should emphasize that one of the functions of wordplay is to increase metacognition about words, and textbooks should be added learning activities that drive learners' metacognition of words. Secondly, the importance of wordplay in middle and high schools is emphasized. Thirdly, the use of a wider range of levels and types of wordplay is emphasized.
