힙합 아이돌을 표방하며 출발한 방탄소년단이 세계 정상의 자리에 오르기까지의 과정은 전형적인 자기계발식 성공담으로 소비되곤 한다. 그러나 발표 순서대로 방탄소년단의 노래 가사를 읽는다면, 이들의 성장은 훨씬 풍부한 의미를 지님을 알 수 있다. 즉, 자기계발식 성공담의 원형이라고 할 수 있는 조셉 캠벨의 원질신화의 3단 구조를읽어낼 수는 있지만, 이들의 변모 과정은 자유의지에 의한 주체적 선택과 부단한 노력으로 사회적인 성공에 도달하는 자기계발식 서사로만 읽을 수는 없다. 그보다는 그들의 나이, 그들이 대면한 상황에 반응하며 자유의지를 가진 개인 주체에서 비개인적인우주적 힘을 대표하는 강도-특이성으로 ‘되어가는’ 생성에 가깝다. 이를테면, 데뷔 초에 발표한 학교 3부작은 대중음악계로 대표되는 기성 사회에 진입하는 과업에 대해노래했다면, 무사히 케이팝 세계에 진입한 이후에는 기대보다 훨씬 높이 빠른 속도로인기를 얻게 되면서 찾아온 정체성과 내면의 혼란을 사랑이라는 주제에 대한 천착을통해 이해하는 과업을 노래한다. “Map of the Soul” 연작은 이러한 자신들의 행보를“영혼의 지도”를 제작하는 과정으로 정립하면서 자신들의 소명을 재확인한다. 그것은 ‘노래-강도’로서 또 다른 특이성들과 접속하며, 부단히 탈주하는 선을 그리는 것이다. 이와 같이 탈주선으로 방탄소년단의 성장 서사를 이해하는 일은 그들의 세계적인 영향력을 통해 개인을 규율하는 신자유주의 시대의 성공 담론에 대한 대안을 모색하는출발점이 될 것이다.
The process of BTS rising to the top of the world, which started off as hip-hop idols, is often consumed as a typical self-development success story. However, if you read the lyrics of BTS’ songs in the order of their release, you can see that their growth has a much richer meaning. Although it is possible to recognize the three-step of Joseph Campbell’s monomyth, which can be said to be the prototype of a self-development success story, the process of their transformation cannot be reduced a self-development narrative that reaches social success through choice based on free will and constant effort. Rather, it is more like a creation that ‘becomes’ from an individual subject with free will to an intensity-singularity representing an impersonal cosmic force in response to their age and the situation they face. For example, if the school trilogy released at the beginning of their debut carried out the task of entering the established society represented by the popular music world, after safely entering the world of K-pop, gaining popularity at a much higher rate than expected, carries out the task of understanding identity and inner confusion through the subject of love. The “Map of the Soul” series reaffirms their calling as a ‘song-intesity’ through creating “the map of the soul” by connecting with other singularities and constantly drawing a line of flight. Understanding the growth narrative of BTS as a line of flight will be to seek an alternative to the success discourse in the era of neoliberalism that regulates individuals, and which will have an important ripple effect considering BTS’ global popularity.
