본고는 이어의 소설 〈담초옥〉에서 희곡 《비목어》로의 개작 양상을 고찰한 글이다. 특히 새로운 인물과 이야기 중 가장 큰 변화를 보이는 막어옹 즉, 모용개에 초점을 맞추었다. 원작에서 막어옹은 평범한 시골 어부이지만 희곡에서는 사직한 진사출신 은사로 바뀌었다. 이에 따라 희곡 속 막어옹은 담초옥의 재능을 알아보고서 과거시험 응시를 권유하고, 담초옥이 임용된 후 그곳 민생과 도적에 대한 정보를 제공해 주는 등 담초옥에게 폭넓게 도움을 준다. 또한 가짜 모용개로 인한 담초옥과 모용개 간의 대립도 추가되었다. 둘 간의 오해가 해소되는 과정에서 담초옥과 모용개가 이상적인 관리임이 드러나고 동시에 忠孝, 公私, 권선징악과 같은 교훈적 내용도 포함되었다. 이어가 《비목어》의 인물과 내용을 교훈적인 방향으로 개작한 원인은 첫째 희곡이라는 장르가 갖는 파급력을 이용한 교훈 전달의 의도, 둘째 자신의 소설집이 禁書가 된 후 자기 작품에 대한 타인의 부정적 평가를 의식하여 자체 검열한 것임을 알 수 있었다.
This article is an analysis of the adaption from Li Yu's novel TanChuyu to the drama Bimuyu. In particular, I focused on Mu Rongjie, who changed the most among the new characters. In the novel, MO is an ordinary fisherman, but in the play, he is a retired official. Accordingly, Mu Rongjie in the play finds out the ability of Tan Chuyu and recommends taking the imperial examination. Also, after Tan Chuyu becomes an official, he helps Tan Chuyu in various ways, such as providing information about the area. Also added the misunderstanding and confrontation between Tan Chuyu and Mu Rongjie. And through the process of clearing up misunderstandings, Tan Chuyu and Mu Rongjie were shown to be ideal officials. At the same time, instructive contents such as respect for respect and public and private affairs were included. The reason Bimuyu changed in a didactic direction is as follows. First, it is because of the intention to deliver a lesson using the ripple power of the genre of Drama. Second, after Li Yu's novel became a banned book, when he negatively evaluated his personality and his writings, he was conscious of this and censored himself.
