본 연구의 목적은 한·일 다도문화에 내재된 조화(調和)와 절제(節制)의 공간을 ‘중정(中正)’과 ‘와비(侘)’를 통해 살펴봄으로써 다도문화가 지닌 종합예술성을 규명하려는 것이다. 한·일 다도문화는 자연과 인간 및 정신 간의 조화와 절제의 산물이라 할 수 있다. 한·일 다도에 있어 조화와 절제는 자연과 인간 및 정신 간의 소통의 공간(조화)과 더불어 주어진 여건 속에서 자아를 제어하는 공간(절제)을 창조함으로써 다선일미(茶禪一味)의 경지로 이끌어 주고 있다. 이러한 조화와 절제는 한·일 다도의 궁극적 이상 상태를 지칭하는 ‘중정(中正)’과 ‘와비(侘)’로 정형화를 보이고 있다. 여기서 한국 다도의 핵심 정신인 중정의 경우에는 ‘조화를 위한 절제’를 강조하고 있으며, 와비에 있어서는 ‘절제를 위한 조화’에 방점을 두고 있다. 한·일 다도에 있어 중정과 와비는 진리의 ‘깨우침(禪)’을 얻는 절대적 경지를 의미한다. 한국 다도의 불변적 진리의 처소인 중정은 자연과 인간 및 정신 간의 자연스러운 조화를 강조하고, 이를 위해서는 인간의 성(誠: 성실)의 절제를 요구하고 있는 것이다. 이에 비해 일본 다도의 와비는 행다(行茶)의 전 과정에서 엄격한 기능적 절제를 강조하며, 이를 위해서 평등한 인간관계에 근거한 자연과 인간 및 정신의 조화를 요구하고 있는 것이다. 이러한 한·일 다도의 조화와 절제의 영역은 상호 융합적으로 작용하며, 그들만의 독특한 생활문화예술로 형상화되어 온 것이다.
This study aims at revealing comprehensive artistry of the tea ceremony culture by illuminating the space of harmony and temperance within Korean and Japanese tea ceremonies through ‘impartiality(中正)’ and ‘wabi’(侘: the acceptance of transience and imperfection). The Korean and Japanese tea ceremonies are fruits of harmony and temperance between Mother Nature and humanity, and their spirit. The harmony and temperance in both countries’ tea cultures lead to the stage of Dasunilmi(茶禪一味: taste Zen in tea) by creating a space to control ourselves in any given circumstances (temperance) with a room for nature and humanity to communicate(harmony). These harmony and temperance show a standardization as ‘impartiality’and ‘wabi’ indicating the ultimate ideal state of Korean and Japanese tea ceremonies. Here, the quintessential spirit of Korean tea ceremony, impartiality emphasizes ‘temperance for harmony’and wabi stresses ‘harmony for temperance.’ Impartiality and wabi of Korean and Japanese tea ceremonies mean the absolute stage of winning spiritual enlightenment. An unchanging truth of Korean tea ceremony, impartiality emphasizes natural harmony between nature, humanity and their spirit and for that purpose, it requires temperance of human sincerity. On the other hand, wabi of Japanese tea ceremony lays stress on a strict functional temperance in all courses of preparing and serving tea. To achieve that, it requires harmony of nature, humanity and their spirit on the basis of equal human relations. The domain of harmony and temperance in Korean and Japanese tea ceremonies mutually interact and have formed their own unique art in everyday life.
