Retrospection about Shilhak at the Great Transition — for Commemorating Bangye’s 400th Birth Year —

이 글은 2022년 12월 22일에 서울에서 열린 제16회 동아시아실학 국제학술회의의 기조발제로 발표한 것이다. 본 학술회의는 ‘위기의 시대, 실학을 다시 생각한다’를 주제로 제시해서, 이에 맞춰 나는 제목을 ‘대전환기에 회고하는 실학사상’으로 잡았다. 그리고 금년이 마침 한국실학의 비조인 반계 유형원의 탄신 400 주년이어서 부제로 ‘반계선생 탄신 400주년을 맞아서’라고 붙였다. 지금 인류가 직면한 위기의 시대를 대전환이 요망되는 상황으로 인식하고 실학의 성립과 전개과정을 역사적으로 성찰하는 것이 이 글의 기본 논지이다. 그리하여 오늘의 대전환기에 있어서 실학사상에 내장된 의미를 부각시켜 보았다. 전체 논지는 한․중․일을 아울러 고려하여 동아시아적 차원에서 구성하였으나, 논의의 중심은 한국실학에 두게 되었다.

This paper is the key-note speech for “16th East Asian Shilhak International Conference” hosted at 22th December, 2022. Considering the title of the conference is “Reconsidering Shilhak at the Age of Crises,” I present my paper as “Retrospection about Shilhak at the Great Transition.” Since this year, 2023, is the 400th birth year of Bangye Ryu Hyeongweon, the founder of Shilhak, my subtitle becomes “for Commemorating Bangye’s 400th Birth Year.” Reflecting current Age of Crises for all human kind, the Great Transition will be required. Therefore, I introspect historical formation and development of Shilhak. I argue that Shilhak can be potential references for current Great Transition as critical thoughts and peace theory. With East Asian perspective, comprehending Chinese and Japanese Shilhak tradition, I mainly debate Korean Shilhak’s historical formation and development.
