아도르노는 철학자나 미학자로서 우리에게 더 잘 알려져 있지만, 사실 사회에 대한 다수의 논문을 생산하고, 독일 사회학계에서 실증주의 논쟁을 주도하고 이끈 비판적 사회이론가이다. 그의 논문 「사회」는 전자본주의 사회와 뚜렷한 단절을 이루는 자본주의 사회에대한 면밀한 분석을 담은 글로서, 그는 이 논문을 통해 자본주의 사회가 자신을 현상하는방식을 넘어서 그것이 스스로를 유지하는 방식을 집요하게 파고든다. 본 연구는 아도르노의 「사회」를 면밀하게 독해함으로써 아도르노가 자본주의 사회의 본질을 ‘추상’의 지배로파악하고 이를 논증하는 과정을 추적한다. 아도르노의 사유에 있어 교환 개념이 갖는 중요성은 익히 잘 알려진 바이다. 하지만 교환을 통해 이루어지는 ‘총체적인 매개’ 개념이어떤 함의를 가지는지, 교환 속에서 구성되는 가치의 실체가 무엇인지, 그리고 교환, 총체성, 가치 개념을 통해 아도르노의 사회 비판이 근본적으로 겨냥하는 것이 무엇인지에 대해선 많은 연구가 이루어지지 않고 있다. 본 연구는 아도르노의 변증법적 ‘사회’ 개념을연구함으로써, 최종적으로는, 개념 비판이 곧 현실 비판임을, 그러므로 사회 ‘개념’을 다루는 것이 단순히 학문적 문제가 아니라 정치적 문제임을 밝힌다.
This study delves into the dialectical nature of Adorno’s concept of society, referred to as ‘society as a concept’, with a particular focus on his article titled ‘Society’. The analysis aims to uncover the precise message conveyed by Adorno through his notion of ‘totalizing mediation’, as well as the individuals and ideas he critiques and engages with in his definition of society as a totality. Furthermore, it seeks to unravel the implications that arise from viewing society as a totality. Adorno's critical engagement with Weber and Durkheim serves as a pivotal aspect of this discussion, and the paper will also delve into the meaning of ‘abstract labour’, which Adorno identifies as a potential condition for exchange. Through this exploration, the research uncovers that Adorno’s social critique primarily targets ‘value’ and ‘abstract labour’ as foundational elements. Moreover, by recognizing society as a ‘totality’ and an ‘abstraction’, it underscores that grappling with the ‘concept’ of society extends beyond the realm of academia, encompassing profound political implications.
