이 논문은 단국대학교에서 소장하고 있는 李中久家 5代 고문서를 중심으로 국채보상운동의 전개 과정에서 나타난 경주 斷煙會社의 조직 활동과 향촌 사회의 공동체 의식 등을 살펴보고 이전 연구 성과와 비교해 볼 때 새롭게 밝혀진 사항들을 정리한 것이다. 경주 지역에서 국채보상운동이 발기한 시기는 1907년 3월 18일(음력 2월 5일)이고, 단연회사가 설립된 시기는 1907년 3월 24일인데, 경주 지역의 의연금을 수금해서 서울 회사에 처음 납부하기 위해 출발한 시기는 1907년 9월 24일이다. 총 모금 금액은 1만 5500냥 쯤으로 6개월 만에 이룬 크나큰 성과라고 할 수 있다. 더 놀라운 사실은 지역 임원의 동참에 의해 분실한 의연금을 다시 마련하였는데, 그 일이 일주일 만에 이루어낸 성과라는 점이다. 이는 단연회사의 일원으로서 운명공동체라는 인식이 없었다면 이루어 낼 수 없는 성과라고 볼 수 있다. 경주 지역 내에서 국채 보상을 위한 의연금 모집이 순조롭게 이루어진 것만은 아니었다. 의연금 출연이 빠르게 진척된 강서면의 의연금을 서울로 보내 다른 면이 자극을 받게 해서 의연금 출연을 독려하였다. 그리고 의연금 모금에 있어서 어느 면은 거부 의사를 밝힌 곳도 있었다. 당시에 의연금을 독려하는 행태에 대해 비난의 의사를 보이며 義捐金의 ‘義’의 명칭에 걸맞게 자발적으로 내게 해야 한다고 주장하였다. 의연금 운송을 위한 비용은 단연회 임원들이 부담하였고, 의연금의 수송을 맡은 인물은 재무를 맡은 任天植의 아들 任彙泰였다. 이중구는 단연회사를 설립하고 자신도 10원의 의연금을 내며 국채보상운동에 적극적으로 기여하였다. 향촌 사회의 구성원들을 응집하는 초석을 마련하였고 이에 따라 지역 주민들의 사회적인 책무를 일깨우는 역할도 수행하였다. 그리고 사돈인 金奎華와의 교류를 통해 다른 지역에서의 국채보상운동에도 간접적으로 기여한 바가 있다.

This paper investigates organizational activities of Danyeon Company in Gyeongju and community spirit of rural community societies found in the process of National Debt Repayment Movement and summarizes new discoveries compared to previous studies, based on antiques documents of Lee Joong-gu’s five generations possessed by Danook Univeristy. National Debt Repayment Movement started on March 18th (February 5th of the lunar calendar) 1907 in Gyeongju, Danyeon Company was established on March 24th 1907, and the contribution of Gyeongju was first delivered to the company in Seoul on September 24th 1907. The total contribution amount was around 15,500 nyang, a successful achievement in six months. It is more startling that the contribution was lost by a local executive, but it was collected only in one week. This accomplishment would have been impossible without the awareness of ‘destiny-sharing-community’ as a member of no -smoking company. Contribution for National Debt Repayment Movement in Gyeongju was not easily collected. Contribution from Gang-seo Myun, where contribution was donated fast, was sent to Seoul first to motivate other Myuns to collect donations. Some Myuns showed intention of refusal to fund-raising. They criticized activities of encouraging donations, arguing that donation should be made voluntarily as it meant to be. The executives of Danyeon Company bore the expenses for delivering the donations, and Lim Hee-tae, son of Lim Cheon-sik in charge of finance, delivered the donations. After establishing Danyeon Company, Lee Joong-gu donated 10 won himself and actively contributed to National Debt Repayment movement. He laid the foundation of cohering members of rural community society, and accordingly enlightened local residents of social responsibilities. He also cooperated with his in-law Kim Gyu-hwa to indirectly contribute to National Debt Repayment Movement in other regions.
