This study investigated the characteristics of the grammaticalization of the ancient Chinese ‘qie’ from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. First, the cognitive path of grammaticalization was classified into three categories by referring to the existing process of transforming to syntactic expletives, and the processes of semantic expansion and semantic differentiation were explored with nouns and adjectives, and with Adverb 1 and pronouns, respectively. Second, in the grammaticalization of ‘qie,’ the chain shift of metonymy was examined. Third, the individual grammaticalization stages of 'Verb 1' and Adverb 2 were examined, and the process of synchronization with metaphors was explored. Fourth, the synchronization of metaphtonymy in Adverb 3 was analyzed. Fifth, based on the existing metonymy and metaphor model, the cognitive models of Path A and Path B were analyzed, and the grammaticalization process and concept of Path C were explored using a new metaphtonymy model.
