미디어에서 노인여성들은 성역할 기대하에서 가족 내의 어머니, 할머니로서 재현되었고 노인남성들에 비해 공적 영역의 역할모델이 다양하지 않았다. 하지만 생산적 노인상이 부상되고 노인여성의 재현도 변화되고 있다. 이 연구는 여성주의 관점에서 미디어 에서 노인여성의 재현에서 고정관념을 살펴보고 역할모델의 가능성을 탐색했다. 역할 모델의 구성은 노인여성의 자아존중감을 높이고 임파워먼트하기 위한 것이다. 연구방법으로는 미디어 분석을 실시했다. 분석대상으로는 노인여성이 주연이나 인상 깊은 조연으로 재현되거나 노년과 죽음을 주제로 다룬 영화 11편, TV 프로그램 9 편, 유명 노인여성 유튜버의 에세이 2권을 선정했다. 연구결과, 미디어에서 노인여성은 여전히 희생적인 모성에 제한되고 인생을 즐기는 노인여성은 부정적으로 재현되었다. 하지만 자기계발에 몰두하는 지적인 이미지로 재현되기도 한다. 미디어에서 노인여성들은 여성간의 우정을 중시하고 할머니의 친근함을 활용해서 세대간 소통을 통해 사회적 관계를 확장한다. 또한 미디어는 성공한 노인여성들뿐 아니라 돌봄과 임금노동을 통해 열심히 살아온 노인여성들을 재현한다. 노인여성의 역할모델은 모성이나 생산적 노인상의 한계를 넘어서야 한다. 즉, 세대 간 소통에서 평등한 관계를 지향하고 공동체에 도움이 되며 나이듦과 죽음을 삶의 과정으로 인식하는 노년의 역할모델이 요구된다.
Older women are frequently depicted in the media as mothers and grandmothers. Women are underrepresented as role models in public spaces in comparison to older men. With the emergence of active seniors, the representation of older women has changed. This paper examines the media stereotypes of older women and investigates their potential to serve as positive role models who surpass stereotypes and empower older women. This paper conducted a media analysis. The focus of the analysis was on 11 films, 9 television documentaries, and entertainment programs that featured older women in leading or significant supporting roles, or that dealt with older woman characters and narratives about old age and death. Additionally, the analysis included two volumes written by influential older women YouTube creators. The research findings indicate that older women are still portrayed in the media as sacrificing mothers, while women who prioritize their lives are negatively represented. In accordance with the discourse on active aging, however, older women are depicted as intelligent individuals who prioritize self-development. In the media, older women emphasize the significance of female friendships. They encourage intergenerational communication and utilize a grandmother’s affinity to expand social relationships. The media tends to reinterpret ordinary older women as the people who dedicated their lives to care-giving and labor, as well as successful women. The role models for older women should extend beyond the traditional roles of motherhood or productive aging. Aging and death should be viewed as a natural part of the life course by role models, who play a crucial role in fosteringequal relationships within the community.
