이 연구는 프랑스혁명기에 탄생한 루브르 박물관을 정치적 상징화의관점에서 해석하는 것을 목표로 한다. 주지하는 것처럼, 루브르 박물관은프랑스 군주제의 정치적 전통이 서려 있는 유서 깊은 장소 루브르궁을 혁명세력이 용도 변경함으로써 탄생했다. 무엇보다 혁명기의 박물관은 구체제의 문화재들을 온전히 보관하고 전시하기 위한 기능적 필요에 부응하기 위해 만들어진 제도적 공간이었다. 하지만 우리는 그러한 관점을통해서는 루브르 박물관의 탄생사를 입체적으로 이해하기 어렵다는인식 아래에서 정치적 상징화와 의미화의 차원으로 접근할 필요를 제안한다. 그 관점을 취한다면 우리에게는 혁명세력이 왜 루브르궁을 박물관으로 선택했는지에 대한 이해가 가능해진다. 이 연구는 혁명세력이 루브르의 기능을 근본적으로 변경함으로써 혁명의 의미와 가치를감각적으로 드러내주는 정치적 기호로 사용한 것으로 해석한다. 말하자면 루브르는 근대적 주체로서 네이션의 의미화를 구현하는 장소로, 구체제의 문화적 본질과 대비되는 정치적 의미체로, 프랑스 문화통치원리를 근대적 이념에 적용하기 위한 기호로 이해되었다는 것이다.
This study aims to interpret the Louvre Museum, which was created during the French Revolution, in terms of political symbolization. As is well known, the Louvre Museum was created when revolutionary forces repurposed the Louvre Palace, a historic place where the political traditions of the French monarchy were preserved. Above all, museum in the revolutionary period was institutional space created to meet the functional needs of preserving and exhibiting cultural assets of the ancient regime. However, we suggest the need to approach the level of political symbolization and signification under the recognition that it is difficult to understand wholly the birth of Louvre Museum in that functional perspective. If we take that point of view, we can understand why the revolutionary forces chose the Louvre as their museum. This study interprets that the revolutionary forces used it as a political symbol that sensibly reveals the meaning and value of the revolution by fundamentally changing the function of the Louvre. In other words, the Louvre was understood as a place that embodies the signification of nation as a modern subject, as a political symbol that contrasts with the cultural essence of the ancient regime, and as a sign to apply the principles of French cultural governance to modern ideology.
