본 연구는 1601년 당대 서울에서 관직 생활을 했던 영남 출신 인사들의 모임인 ‘영남동도회’를 검토한 결과이다. 이를 통해 당대 영남인들이 서울에서 회합한 목적과 의미를 추출하였다. 1601년 ‘영남동도회’에 참여한 구성원을 분석하는 과정에서 이들이 영남 내에서도 ‘상주권’을 기반으로 하며 학문적으로는 퇴계 이황의 영향을 받은 이들로서 지역적, 학문적 인연이 닿아있는 이들 사이의 결속임을 확인하였다. 이들 구성원은 27명의 소수에 불과했지만 당시 서울에 올라가서 관직 생활을 하고 있던 영남사람의 대부분을 포함하고 있었다. 당시 관직을 할 수 있는 영남인들은 이보다 훨씬 많았지만 다양한 사유로 인해 서울에 없었던 경우가 있었고, 서울에 있던 영남인들은 대부분 이 모임에 참여했던 것으로 보인다. 이들은 상주라는 지역성과 퇴계의 학문적 영향을 받은 이들이 많았던 것도 사실이지만 정인홍과 가까운 사람들을 제외하고는 영남 내의 다양한 지역성과 학문성을 지닌 이들도 함께 모여 있었다. 당시 영남인들이 규합해야 했던 이유는 영남인들의 입지가 줄어든 상황에서 상호 간의 어려운 처지를 공유하기 위한 모임이었을 가능성 역시 포함되어 있었다. 영남인들은 서울에서 ‘영남’이라는 지역성을 공유하였고, 그 인연은 서울에서의 생활에 중요한 결속의 장치로 기능했다. 더욱이 동향은 대체로 혈연과 학연을 공유한다는 점에서 정치적 연대를 함께 하기에도 쉬운 집단이었음을 이 모임을 통해 알 수 있다.
This study is the result of reviewing the “Yeongnam Dongdo Society,” a group of people from Gyeongsang-do who served in government offices in Seoul in 1601. Through this, the purpose and meaning of the meeting of public officials from Gyeongsang-do at the time in Seoul were found. This study analyzed members of the “Yeongnam-dong Society” of 1601. They were specifically based on the region of Sangju (尙州) in Gyeongsang-do. Academically, they were influenced by Toegye Yi Hwang. Those members were only in a small number of 27, but they accounted for the majority of Gyeongsang-do people who went to Seoul and served in government offices at the time. There were far more from Gyeongsang-do who held government posts at the time, but most of them were not in Seoul for various reasons. This shows that most people from Gyeongsang-do in Seoul participated in the meeting. In addition, they were joined by people of various localities and academic characteristics from the same province. The reason why people from Gyeongsang-do had to rally at the time was that they shared their difficulties with each other at a time when their position was reduced. For the officials from Gyeongsang-do, the ties made based on the same region served as an important device for solidarity in their lives in Seoul. As people from the same hometown generally made blood ties and academic ties with each other, it can be assumed that they could also easily form political solidarity as well.
