This study is based on the myth of Seolmundae Halmang and Obaek Janggun (500 general), which is being passed down on South Korea's Jeju Island, to explain the meaning of the cannibalistic motif that forms the core of the narrative. Why is the mythology enthusiasts group of Jeju Island telling such a terrible story about the goddess who created their land and her sons, the Obaek Janggun? In response to this question, the cannibalistic motif of this myth confirmed that the endo-cannibalism concept of the primordial mythology enthusiasts group was the result of the divine succession process, from Seolmundae Halmang to her sons. In the context of symbolism, it is also revealed that children who have grown up at the expense of their parents have embodied the real-world principle of human life in which they realized their sacrifices and inherited their parents’ lives. In response, Jeju Island’s mythology enthusiast group internalizes the universal principle of the generational inheritance of their reality through this narrative. Furthermore, they are willing to inherit and realize the will of the great goddess of creation that has led from Seolmundae Halmang to the Obaek Janggun and themselves. It is meaningful that this is the first achievement to find the function and meaning of the cannibal motif in this myth. This allowed us to reveal the meaning and value of one of Korea's major mythological materials more fully, as well as confirm the universal value of Korea's mythological data.
