이 연구는 시리아 교회, 에프렘, 사역자의 경건을 소개하는 것을 목표로 삼는다. 더 구체적으로는 시리아 교부 에프렘을 사역자의 경건의 대표적인 인물로 예시하고 오늘날 한국 교회의 신학과 목회에 도전을 주고자 한다. 이를 위해 먼저 사역자의 경건이란 개념을 정리하고(II), 시리아 교회의 유산을 개관하고(III), 에프렘의 사역과 활동을 사역자의 경건이란 관점에서 분석한다(IV). 이 연구는 에프렘은 언약의 자녀로서 평생 독신을 지키며, 운율찬양과 시를 저작하고, 성경을 주해하고, 예형과 상징을 사용하여 자연과 성경에 나타난 신비를 탐구하고, 세례와 성찬의 의미를 해설하고, 페르시아-로마 전쟁에서 하나님의 섭리를 살피고 회개를 촉구하며, 이단의 위협에 대해 교회를 수호한 사역자로서 치열한 삶을 살았다고 밝힌다. 또한 에프렘의 사역과 신학이 오늘날 한국교회와 신학에 주는 의미를 고찰한다.
This study aims to introduce the Syriac Church, Ephrem the Syrian, and pastoral piety. More concretely, it seeks to pose challenges to theology and ministry of the Korean church by illustrating Ephrem the Syrian as a representative figure for pastoral piety. It first presents the concept of pastoral piety (II), then overviews the legacy of the Syriac Church(III), and finally analyzes Ephrem’s ministry and activities from the perspective of pastoral piety(IV). This study reveals that Ephrem lived quite an intense life as a minister, keeping celibacy in his entire life as a son of the Covenant, composing metrical hymns and poems, expounding the Scriptures, investigating mysteries of faith in nature and Scriptures through types and symbols, explaining the meanings of baptism and Lord’s Supper, examining the divine providence during the wars between Rome and Persia, calling the people of Nisibis to repentance, and protecting the church against the dangers of heresies. Furthermore, it brings to the fore the significance and implications of Ephrem’s ministry and theology on the contemporary Korean church and theology.
