The main purpose of this paper is to show that Dewey's naturalistic ethics is not scientific reductionism by revealing the meaning of the Dewey’s scientific method and the qualitative meaning of 'moral deliberation.' Dewey has been misunderstood to reduce moral issues to the realm of scientific certainty by using the terms observation, experimental method and verification in moral inquiry. In my view, the misunderstanding that Dewey ethics is an attempt to reduce morality to science or to establish a moral science that pursues the certainty arises from a limited understanding of moral inquiry only at the level of methodology. For Dewey, moral inquiry is a comprehensive activity that includes scientific methodology and encompasses the qualitative dimension of experience. Deliberation is a concept that shows the qualitative dimension of experience well. Deliberation refers to moral inquiry conducted in certain specific situations in which value judgment is required, and is a process of seeking a path to alternative behavior through imagination. By revealing that deliberation is accomplished by qualitative thought in which the role of imagination is prominent, I will show that moral inquiry is not an attempt to reduce moral values to scientific truth, but an attempt to qualitatively integrate elements of all situations.
