The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of morning exercise for 12 weeks on IGF-1 (insulin like growth factor-1; IGF-1), BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor; BDNF) and cortisol in middle school male students aged 13 to 15 years old. The subjects were randomly assigned to an exercise group (n=13) and a control group (n=11). The 45 minute morning exercise routine (jump band exercise) was performed 3 times per week for 12 weeks. Exercise intensity progressively increased from 40% HRR to 70% HRR. The test data were analyzed by two-way repeated measures ANOVA, independent t-test, paired t-test and the alpha level of p<0.05 was set for all tests of significance. The findings of this study were as follows; IGF-1 and BDNF significantly increased and cortisol levels significantly decreased in the exercise group after participating in the morning exercise routine. In conclusion, this study suggests that regular and continuous jump band exercise is an effective method for improving brain function by increasing IGF-1 and BDNF levels and decreasing cortisol levels in male middle school students.
