이 논문은 최명익 모더니즘 소설의 인물 삼각구도 양상에 대해 고찰하고, 해방 후 최명익 리얼리즘 소설과의 관련성에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 이런 관점은 최명익 소설을 연속적이고 총체적으로 인식하는 데 도움을 줄 것이다. 최명익은 사회주의 이념에 관심이 있었고, 삼각구도의 기반이 되는 유물론적 변증법에 대해서도 조예가 깊었다. 그는 자본주의 근대적 시간에 대해서는 비판적 거리를 유지하며, 그 대안을 찾고자 하였다. 이와 같은 최명익의 문제의식은 소설 속 인물 삼각구도의 모색과 확립으로 구체화 되었다. 최명익의 모더니즘 소설에 나타난 삼각구도 모색 과정에는 작가의 구체적인 문제의식과 근대를 타개하기 위한 노력이 담겨 있다. 최명익은 식민지 현실을 타개하기 위한 대안으로 제3의 인물, 제3의 시간, 제3의 공간에 주목하였다. 삼각구도의 확립과 제3의 인물형 설정, 시간의 유보, 문지방 공간의 설정 등은 객관적 현실에 대해 명확히 인식하고 부정적 현실의 대안을 모색하고자 한 작가의 노력이 반영된 것이다. 이는 ‘새로운 대안 제시’라는 점에서 리얼리즘과 긴밀하게 연관된다. 그리고 새로운 대안 모색은 해방 후 최명익이 사회주의 리얼리즘 소설을 창작하는 데에 근간이 되었다.
This study examined triangular aspects of character relationships in Choi Myeong-ik’s modernist novels. This study examined the relevance of Choi Myeong-ik’s realism novels. This perspective will help us recognize Choi Myung-ik’s novels continuously and holistically. This article sees that the possibility of being a realist writer is inherent in modernism novels based on triangular composition before liberation. Choi Myung-ik was interested in socialist ideology. He was also deeply interested in materialist dialectic, the basis of the triangular structure. He maintained a critical distance from modern capitalism and emphasized the will of the subject. Choi Myung-ik’s critical mind was embodied in the search and establishment of the triangular structure in the novel. The process of searching for a triangular composition of character relationships in Choi Myeong-ik’s modernism novels revealed the writer’s critical mind and efforts to overcome the modern era. Next, this study looked at the significance of the search for a triangular composition and its relevance to realism novels. Choi Myung-ik paid attention to alternative figures, alternative times, and alternative spaces to overcome the bleak reality of colonial rule. This was to seek a clear perception of objective reality and an alternative to negative reality. These efforts and search for alternatives are seen as the basis for Choi Myeong-ik’s creation of socialist realism novels after liberation.
