This study aims to identify and improve existing problems with elementary school English listening activities. The study conducted design-based research (DBR) for twelve weeks with six elementary school students in the 3rd grade. The results of this study are as follows: problems with English listening activities include a lack of interest, short listening times, the low level of difficulty, and the need for authentic materials. Task-based listening activities were conducted using chatbots and metaverses to address these issues. As a result, students became more interested in English listening activities and actively participated in class. Furthermore, listening activities using the metaverse increased student interaction. An essential finding of this study is that even though the level of the listening activity is higher than that of the students, they easily engage with listening activities when they are enjoyable.
