A Search for a New Chapel to Complement Large-Group Chapel: Focusing on the Case of Soongsil University

일반적으로 기독교대학에서 채플을 운영하는 목적은 건학 이념과 기독교적 정체성을 계승하고, 유지하는 것에 있다. 대그룹형태의 채플은 이러한 목적을 달성하는데 중요한 역할을 해왔지만, 디지털원주민으로 대변되는 새로운 세대의 등장과 특히 코로나19 이후 교육환경의 변화, 그리고 국가인권위원회의 권고는 기존 채플을 보완하는 다른 형태의 채플을 요구한다. 숭실대학교에서 시행되고 있는 소그룹채플은 이러한 요구에 부응하는 새로운 형태의 채플이다. 소그룹채플은 크게 다음의 세 가지 효과 및 의의가 있다. 첫째, 디지털원주민 세대의 특성에 부합하고, 그들의 결핍을 채워주는 교육방식이다. 둘째, 강압적이지 않은 방식으로 기독교의 주요 사상과 세계관을 전달할 수 있는 방법이다. 셋째, 교양교육을 위한 적절한 환경을 제공한다. 소그룹채플이 대안적 채플로서 자리매김하기 위해서는 몇 가지 선결되어야 할 과제가 있다. 우선 대학생들의 눈높이에 맞는 지적, 신앙적 소양을 갖춘 소그룹 리더들을 안정적으로 확보하고 유지할 수 있어야 한다. 또한 소그룹활동의 원활한 진행을 위해 체계적인 리더교육프로그램과 매뉴얼, 그리고 충분한 활동공간이 마련되어야 한다.

The purpose of chapel that is operated as a required subject in Christian universities is to inherit and maintain the founding philosophy and Christian identity of the universities. Large-group chapel has played an important role in achieving this goal. However, the emergence of a new generation represented by ‘digital natives’, changes in the educational environment after COVID-19, and the recommendations of the NationalHuman Rights Commission of Korea require other forms of chapel to complement the existing one. The small-group chapel being implemented in Soongsil University is a new way of chapel that satisfies these needs. The small-group chapel has the following three effects and significance: First, it is an educational method that considers the characteristics of digital natives and fills their deficiencies. Second, it is an effective way to convey the main values and worldviews of Christianity in a way that is not coercive. Third, it provides an appropriate environment for liberal arts education. In order for the small-group chapel to be an alternative, several problems should be solved. First of all, it is necessary to secure and maintain small-group leaders with intellectual and religious knowledge matched to the students’ eye level. In addition, systematic education programs and manuals for the leaders and sufficient activity spaces should be prepared for the smooth progress of small group activities.
