This paper aims to analyze the creation and change the meaning of the word ‘オタク (OTAKU)’ which derived from the Japanese honorific term ‘お宅 (otaku)’ used to refer to one’s counterpart with respect, and to examine how the ‘オタク (OTAKU)’ is borrowed and transformed in Korean and Chinese. This study also aims to analyze the functions of the lexical system and socio-cultural contexts of the recipient language in the process of word borrowing and adaptation. We collected vocabularies that reflect the changes in meaning of the Japanese word 'オタク' (otaku), and compared the three languages by finding corresponding vocabulary combinations and usages in Chinese and Korean languages. In this study, we found that the Japanese word 'オタク' (otaku) was originally borrowed into each recipient language with the same meaning, but later adapted and evolved in different directions due to linguistic or cultural differences in each language, resulting in changes in its meaning.
