This paper aims to explain the meaning of Duns Scotus’s concept of intuitive cognition. According to Scotus, intuitive cognition is given when the following two conditions are met. First, the object must exist. Second, the object must be presented directly without proxy. The cognition that does not satisfy either of the two conditions is called abstract. Until the time of Scotus, the general view was that abstraction, at least in this life, was not only the principal but also the only mode of the intellect’s act. However, Scotus asserts that the contrast between the abstraction and the intuition cuts across not only the senses but also the intellect’s cognition. Scotus’s theory on intellectual intuition sheds new light on the problem of cognition of the individuals in medieval philosophy.
