무을농악은 구미시 무을면의 여러 마을에서 주민들에 의해 전승되다가 연행주체의 교체과정을 거쳐 현재 무을농악보존회를 중심으로 전승되고 있다. 마을공동체에서 전승되던 무을농악은 노동과 축원 그리고 유희의 현장에서 연행되었는데, 그것은 전통적 마을농악의 형태인 노동농악, 축원농악, 유희농악이다. 그러다 농촌사회가 근대사회로 이행되면서 농악 연행현장의 변화가 시작되었고, 동시에 새로운 연행형태인 연희농악이 등장했다. 이후 마을공동체에서 노동ㆍ축원ㆍ유희의 현장이 축소되고 급기야 소멸상태에 이르면서 전통적 마을농악형태의 연행은 중단되고, 무대화된 연희농악 역시 농촌사회의 인구유출로 인하여 전승단절의위기를 맞게 된다. 계속해서 전승기반이 약화되던 무을농악은 전승단절 위기를 극복하기 위해서 무형문화재 지정을 받기 위한 작업에 착수한다. 무을농악이 무형문화재로 지정받기 위해선 무엇보다 전통성을 인정받는 것이 주된 과제였다. 무을농악의 전통성 정립 과정은 연행주체의 판단에 의해 이루어졌고, 그 과정에서 이전의 것이 ‘전통’의 개념으로 재현되기도 하였으며, 탈락되기도 하였다. 또한, 역사를 정립하고, 판제 등의 연행 텍스트를 무대화시키면서 이전에 없었던 것들이 새롭게 만들어지기도 하였다. 이렇게 만들어진 전통을 기반으로 하여 무형문화재로 지정된 무을농악은 문화재로서의위상에 맞추어 문화재 지정 당시의 연행 텍스트를 전통의 ‘원형’으로 삼는다. 만들어진 전통이 절대불변의 정전으로서 위상을 갖게 되면서 무을농악은 새로운 모습으로 재탄생되었다.
Mueul Nongak had been passed down among villages people of Mueul-myeon, which located in Gumisi, and is inherited within Mueul Nongak Preservation Society nowdays. Mueul Nongak, passed down with village community, was performed in the accident of labor, praying and entertainment which is traditional form of village Nongak. With the modernization of rural society, circumstance of performance changed and performance nongak, which is new version of nongak emerged. After that, the place for labor, praying, entertainment nongak diminished and finally went extinct and performance of traditional village nongak ceased. Staged entertainment nongak, too, encountered crisis severence of transmission with population decrease of rural society. Mueul nongak, which went through the weakenig of groundwork of transmission, started to make effort to be designated for cutural property. To be designated for cultural property, Mueul nongak had to be recognized for its traditionality. Establishing traditionality of Mueul nongak was fulfilled by judgement of subject of performance, and during this process prior elements were represented for tradition or left out. By founding of history and staging performance text, new components were made. With this invented tradition, Mueul nongak, which was designated for cultural heritage, made the text of performance, at the time of designation, into ‘archetype’. While invented tradition became immutable standard, Mueul nongak is reborn as new form.
