이 논문은 경북 지역에서 주로 전승되는 남사고 묏자리 구전설화에 대해 살핀 것이다. 그간 선행 연구에서는 ‘구천십장’으로 대표되는 남사고 묏자리 설화에서 그가 구천십장에 실패한 이유를 풍수로만 이해했다. 즉, 남사고가 이장에 실패한 것은 ‘구룡쟁주’가 아닌 ‘고사괘벽’으로 묏자리를 옮겼기 때문이라는 것이다. 하지만 본 연구는 이러한 해석이 <구천십장>의 서사가 끝난 이후 화자의 평가일 뿐이지 <구천십장>의 서사에서 연유한 것으로 보지 않았다. <구천십장>의 내용을 면밀히 살피면, 그 이유가 남사고의 욕심과 아버지의 적악에서 비롯된 것이라고 서술되기 때문이다. 무엇보다 그간의 해석은 남사고에 관한 인물 설화 전체를 논의하는 과정에서 <구천십장> 설화를 단편적으로 이해한 것이다. 이러한 문제의식을 바탕으로 먼저 <천하 명사 남사고의 묘자리 보는 눈>을 통해 남사고가 타인의 목숨이나 처지를 고려하지 않는 이기적인 삶을 살았음을 확인할 수 있었다. 다음으로 <국풍 남사고의 모친 묘터>를 통해 남사고가 자신의 풍수에만 관심을 두고 모친의 아픔에는 무관심했던 삶을 살았음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이 두 모습을 통해 남사고가 땅의 속뜻만 볼 수 있을 뿐, 사람의 속뜻을 제대로 볼 수 없는 인물임을 알 수 있었다. 이런 인물이 묏자리를 거듭 옮겼기에 결국 그 이장이 실패했음을 파악하였다.

This paper examined the traditional legend of the grave site of Namsago, which has been mainly passed down in Gyeongsangbuk-do. Previous studies have only understood the reason why he failed to attain ‘GucheonSibjang(九遷十葬)’ as feng shui. In other words, Namsago failed to move the grave site because he moved his grave to ‘Gosagwabeok(枯蛇掛壁)’, not the ‘Guryongjaengju(九龍爭珠)’. However, this study did not see this interpretation as originating from the narrative of ‘GucheonSibjang’. Because this interpretation is the speaker's evaluation after the narrative of ‘GucheonSibjang’ is over. If you look closely at the contents of ‘GucheonSipjang’, it is explained that the reason for the failure of the grave site was the greed of Namsago and the long course of the evil life of his father. From this point of view, each piece of ‘GucheonSibjang’ was examined in detail to confirm the reason why Namsago failed to determine the grave site. First of all, it was confirmed that Namsago lived a selfish life that did not consider the lives or situations of others through <The eye of the grave site of the unrivaled Namsago>. Next, through <National feng shui of Namsago's Mother's grave site>, it was confirmed that Namsago was only interested in his feng shui and lived an indifferent life to his mother's pain. Through this, it was found that Namsago was a person who could only see the meaning of the ground but could not see the meaning of a person properly. As such a figure moved the grave repeatedly, it was eventually found that failed.
