이 글은 바빙크의 신비적 연합 사상이 무엇이고 그것이 가진 신학적 함의가 무엇인지를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 바빙크는 전통적인 신비적 연합 사상과의 관계에서 부정이든 긍정이든 차이를 둔다. 전자는 부정적 전통으로 신비적 연합의 오류의 길이며 후자는 긍정적 전통으로 개혁파 신학의 토대를 놓은 칼뱅의 신비적 연합 사상이다. 바빙크는 후자의 길을 따르며 그것을 발전시킨다. 신비적 연합은 창조주와 피조물의 구별 안에 일어나는 실제적이고 인격적인 존재론적 연합이다. 신자는 그리스도의 전체(신성과 인성)와 성령에 의해 연합한다. 삼위 하나님의 삶은 언약적 삶이다. 그 안에 은혜언약의 영원한 토대가 놓여 있다. 인간 구원에 관한 아버지, 아들, 그리고 성령 사이에 구원협약이 존재한다. 구원협약은 영원에서 일어나는 것으로서 시간속에서의 일어나는 은혜 언약의 토대이다. 그리스도는 구원협약으로 인하여 인간이 되었으며 자기 백성을 위한 구원을 획득했다. 루터파는 신비적 연합을 인간 안에서 주관적으로 이뤄지는 인간론적인 관점에서 보았다면, 바빙크는 영원성에서 출발한다. 구원협약에서 신비적 연합이 시작된다. 바빙크의 신비적 연합은 기독론적 토대에 근거한다. 다른 19세기 신학자들과는 달리 바빙크는 기독론을 방법론적으로 예수 그리스도의 역사적 인물에서 출발하지 않고 삼위일체 하나님과 영원한 아들에서 출발한다. 하나님의 영원한 작정, 구원협약은 예수 그리스도의 삶에서 객관적으로 실현이 되었고, 신자들의 삶에서 성령에 의해 주관적으로 실현이 된다. 신비적 연합의 목적은 그리스도의 형상이 이뤄지고 그리스도를 닮는 그리스도인의 삶에 있다. 그리스도는 단지 하나님과 신비한 연합의 모델이 아니라, 중보자로서 구원자이다. 신자는 그리스도 안에서 새로운 신분을 받고 그 새로운 신분에 따라 사는 자이다.
The purpose of this study is to reveal how the ideas of mystical union in Bavinck’s theology appear and what its theological implications are. Bavinck makes a difference, whether negative or positive, in relation to the unio mystica tradition. The former is a negative tradition, a path to the error of mystical union and the latter is a positive tradition, Calvin’s mystical union, which laid the foundation for Reformed theology. Bavinck follows the latter path and develops it. The unio mystica is a real and personal, ontological union that takes place in the Creator/ creature distinction. Believers are united with whole Christ by the Holy Spirit. The life of the Triune God is a covenant life. Therein lies the eternal foundation of the covenant of grace. There is a covenant of salvation between the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit concerning the human salvation. The covenant of salvation takes place in eternity and is the basis for the covenant of grace that takes place in time. Covenant of salvation has been objectively realized in the life of Jesus Christ and are subjectively realized by the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers.
