본고는 조선 후기 대표적 서족 가문인 창녕 성씨 참봉공파의 학지와 가학의 전승 과정을 통시적으로 조망한 글이다. 과거에 합격하고 연행과 통신사행을 체험한 이력이 있는 인물을 논의의 중심에 둔 바 ‘성후룡-성완-성몽량-성대중-성우증-성인호’에 이르는 6대를 주목하였다. 이들의 기록을 검토한 결과 몇 가지 경향성이 확인된다. 첫째 대부분 당대 문인들에게 박학하다는 평가를 받았다. 박학한 학문 성향을 지닌 이들은 해외 체험을 통해 인식의 전환에까지 이른 것은 아니나 견문이 확장되었다. 둘째 선조의 연행 및 통신사행 기록을 숙지하였다. 이를 통해 보다 빨리 새로운 지식 정보를 포착하여 기록으로 남겼다. 셋째 가문적 배경과 본인의 정치적 성향으로 인해 투철한 대명의리를 견지하고 있다. 이는 연행과 통신사행을 체험한 이후에도 일관되게 드러나는 양상이다. 넷째 알레니, 마테오리치, 유구ㆍ안남ㆍ시암 사신, 『직방외기』, 『동자문』 등 이국의 인물과 학문에 대한 관심이 크다. 다섯째 두레박, 고구마, 수차 등 이국의 문물 특히 조선의 이용후생에 도움 되는 것에 대한 관심을 적극적으로 표출하고 수입을 강조하였다. 요컨대 창녕 성씨 참봉공파가 조선 후기 서족 명문가로 공고히 자리매김하는데 연행과 통신사행을 통한 견문의 확대와 이로 인한 새로운 지식 정보의 신속한 습득 및 전승이 중요한 역할을 한 사실을 확인하였다.
This article prospects one of representative sub-branch family in Late Choson, Changnyong Seong Family’s Chambong-gong Clan, especially about the succession of cognition and family scholarship in diachronic view. As discussion focus on personnel with experience of successful candidate of civil exam and participation in diplomatic mission to China or Japan, spotlight is on the 6 successive generation of the family, Seong Huryong-Seong Wan-Seong Mongryang-Seong Daejung-Seong Ujeung -Seong Inho. Research on records of this members implies following tendencies. First, they were recognized as highly literate from scholars of their era. Though their literacy did not advanced to transition of perception, foreign experience led them to widen their knowledge. Second, each member have well- acquainted the writings of their ancestors on diplomatic mission. Thus they were able to capture new experience comparatively fast and leave the writings themselves. Third, because of personal political inclination and family background, they had firm and clear mindset of ‘Loyalty to Ming’. This tendency existed consistent after their diplomatic mission. Fourth, they had huge interest about foreign people and studies, such as Giulio Aleni, Matteo Ricci, Diplomats from RyukyuㆍAnnamㆍSiam, Jikbangoegi, Dongjamun. Fifth, they showed active curiosity upon foreign products and cultures like well bucket, sweet potato, waterwheel, which may help welfare of Choson, and emphasized to import those culture. To put it short, it is found that quicker access to newest academic information and succession of the information within the family tree have allowed Chambong-gong Clan of Changnyong Seong Family firmly establish themselves as the prestigious sub-branch family of Late Choson.
