This study investigated the effects of pre-task planning (planning vs. no planning) and task structure (tightly vs. loosely structured) on the story retelling performance of thirty-four Korean EFL freshmen in terms of fluency, accuracy, and complexity. The data was measured using speech rate, mean length of runs, clause accuracy, length of AS unit, and lexical variety. The results showed that pre-task planning led learners to focus their attention on the content, resulting in improved speech rate of learners. Second, different types of task conditions did not significantly affect the learners' accuracy. Third, a loosely structured task had a positive effect on the lexical variety of learners. This study has the significance that it tried to fill the research gap on how various types of speaking tasks affect learners' task performance in an English classroom in Korea.
