The (Post)modernity of Kim Joo-young’s Fiction and Female as Heterogeneous Others –Focus on 1970's novels–

홍단비, 2020, 김주영 소설에 나타난 이질적 타자로서의 여성과 (탈)근대성, 어문연구, 185 : 141~162 본고는 ‘동일성’으로서의 근대성에서 벗어나 이질적인 근대성, 즉 ‘차이’로서의 근대성에 주목하여 1970년대 김주영 소설을 다시 읽음으로써 김주영 문학의 위상을 재정립하고, 그 속에 내재되어 있는 새로운 가능성을 탐색하고자 한다. 이를 위해 본고는 김주영의 소설에 등장하는 이질적 타자로서의 여성에 주목하였다. 민중, 민족, 민주, 자본, 이성 등의 근대적 인식 틀을 벗어나 ‘이질성’, ‘타자성’으로서의 여성에 초점을 맞추어 김주영의 소설을 다시 사유할 경우, 김주영의 소설은 실패, 연민, 현실도피의 차원을 넘어, 부정의 생명력을 지닌 해방과 무위의 서사임을 확인할 수 있다. 나아가 김주영의 글쓰기에 내재되어 있는 ‘어머니’에 대한 억압된 무의식을 발견할 수 있으며, ‘타자들의 목소리에 귀 기울이기’라는 김주영 문학의 가치를 확인할 수 있다.

Kim Joo-young’s novels are based on criticism and the sense of resistance to the secular properties of industrialized society in the 1970s. Kim Joo-young is a writer who actively depicts the story of the villagers’ failure to enter the world of urban people and the growing narrative of the villains against the symbolic order through the techniques of satire and reversal. Kim’s novels have sufficient problem consciousness, but his novels tend to be excluded from the central axis of the modernization discourse in the 1970s. This paper will reread Kim Joo-young’s novels in the 1970s, focusing on modernity as ‘difference’, not modernity as ‘identity’. Through this, I will redefine the status of Kim Joo-young literature and explore new possibilities inherent in it. To this end, this paper focused on women as heterogeneous others in Kim's novels. As a result of rethinking Kim’s novels, focusing on women as ‘heterogeneity’ and ‘otherness’ beyond the modern recognition frame of people, democracy, capital, and reason, Kim's novel is not a novel of failure, compassion, and escape, but it is a liberation and floating narrative. Furthermore, we can find the suppressed unconsciousness of ‘mother’ inherent in Kim Joo-young’s writing and confirm the value of Kim Joo-young literature called 'Listen to the voices of others’.
