㈜무학은 경남을 대표하는 소주인 ‘좋은데이’를 생산ㆍ판매하는 기업이다. 이 기업의역사는 고 최위승이 마산양조장을 인수하여 1965년에 무학양조장을 설립한 시점으로 거슬러 올라간다. 무학양조장은 제일제당의 판매대리점에서 출발한 최위승이 대흥상사를 통해 축적한 자본을 기반으로 설립한 기업이다. 이는 국내 최초의 소주 생산 자동화 라인을도입하고, 주정배정제의 기회를 통해 경남에 있던 대부분의 소주 생산 및 판매 회사를 인수한다. 현재 ㈜무학의 초대 회장 최위승은 2022년 6월 2일에 세상을 떠나고, 1994년대표이사로 취임한 그의 둘째 아들 최재호가 기업을 경영하고 있다. 소주 ‘좋은데이’ 생산기업 ㈜무학의 탄생 배경은 최위승의 일대기와 그 맥을 같이하며, 이는 기업과 지역이 함께 성장을 보여주는 우수한 사례라 할 수 있다. 최위승은 생존 시 단순 봉사직인 마산상공회의소 회장 및 대한적십자사 경남지사장 역임한다. 또한, 그는 지역사회 인재양성 기여 및 기업이윤의 사회 환원에 목적을 둔 무학장학재단을 수립한다. 많은 사람으로부터받은 혜택을 갚기 위한 그의 노력에서 우리는 기업가로서 꼭 갖추어야 할 지역사회 봉사정신을 배울 수 있다. ㈜무학의 탄생과 발전 경위는 학회에 처음으로 보고되는 것이며, 경남의 대표적 경영인에 대한 기업가사를 조명하며, 향후 후속 연구를 불러올 수 있다는점에서 학술적으로 그 의미가 크다.
Muhak Co., Ltd. is a company that produces and sells ‘Good Day’, a soju representative of Gyeongnam. The history of this company dates back to the time when the late Wiseung Choi took over Masan Brewery and established Muhak Brewery in 1965. Muhak Brewery was founded by Wiseung Choi, who started out as a sales agent for CJ, with capital accumulated through Daeheung Trading Company. It introduces Korea's first automated production line and acquires most of the soju production and sales companies in Gyeongnam through the opportunity of the alcohol allocation system. Wiseung Choi, the first chairman of Muhak Co., Ltd., passed away on June 2, 2022, and his second son Jaeho Choi, who took office as CEO in 1994, is running the company. While alive, Wiseung Choi serves as the president of the Masan Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Gyeongnam branch of the Korean Red Cross, which are simple volunteer positions. In his efforts to repay the benefits received from many people, we can learn the spirit of community service that entrepreneurs must have.
