The term ‘utopia’ always makes us reconsider reality and ideals, constraints and liberation, parody and praise. So, in this respect, it is necessary to investigate the positions of the Ancient and Middle Ages regarding utopia, to expand the discussion of so-called ‘Utopian literature’, which counts Thomas More’s work as the starting point. ‘Utopia’ can be seen as a broad concept that encompasses the ‘lost paradise’, ‘ideal landscape’, and ‘a country that does not exist in reality’ that humans imagined, so in this paper, we first looked at the reference from Hesiodos and Tiberianus to John Mandeville and Marco Polo, and the topos called ‘locus amoenus’, which resembles the Garden of Eden in the Bible. Next, for the first time in korean research, we reviewed the discussion of the fabliau Cocagne, the world of ‘material abundance’ reminiscent of the famous paintings of Bruegel or Bosch written in the 13th century. Starting with a general review of Lucianos, Boccaccio, Rabelais, and the English text of unknown authors, which are the precedents of the story of Cockaigne, we focused on examining the stories unfolding in the fabliau Cocagne in detail. Our main focus was to closely examine whether this story depicts a space of extreme happiness different from reality or whether it is an ironic story with a parody of reality. Finally, we reconsidered what this story could mean in the reality of the 13th century and its relevance to Christianity. In addition, from the perspective that utopia originated from a concrete consciousness of reality, the multi-layered interpretation contained in fabliau Cocagne was briefly pointed out and assumed as a future in-depth research task.
