Kim Soon-ok. 2022. An Analysis of Vocabulary Usage Patterns in the South Korean Presidential New Year’s Address. Textlinguistics 52. The present study analyzes vocabulary usage across texts of South Korean Presidential New Year’s Address in an attempt to identify the period-specific values and role perception which have been sought after by the nation. Quantitative analyses of the texts are carried out with a focus on high-frequency words. Properties of high-frequency words from various parts of speech are defined, based on which core political values and role perception intrinsic to each period and President are predicted. The results demonstrate that Presidential New Year’s Address places its emphasis on strengthening the bond between the speaker (the President) and the audience (the people), based on their common interest in life within the community. The speaker also focuses on communicating economic issues to the audience, attempts through which perception of their role by each President in a given time period is revealed.
