Galsotaek, Lee Sooyeon. 2022. Study on the Refusal Speech Act of Korean College Students-Focusing on Refusal of Dating Requests, Textlinguistics 52. It is never easy to refuse other people’s good- willed acts, but it can be even more difficult when it comes to refusing confessions of affection. This paper attempts to study the refusal speech acts of Korean college students against dating requests and look into the linguistic practice, relationships, and ideologies of love of the Korean male and female college students. There are several preceding studies on refusal speech acts. Preceding studies have mentioned that refusals need to be categorized and discussed depending on the corresponding preceding utterance, and that the relationship of the speaker and the listener has a large impact. This paper reviewed the preceding studies on refusal, collected examples of actual refusal speech acts through a survey, and categorized the refusal speech acts against dating requests in consideration of the distinctiveness of preceding utterances. Also, this paper compares the results of the research to the study of ‘refusal speech acts against dating requests’ that was published 20 years ago, discussing the changes in the linguistic practices and awareness of present-day college students. This paper also researched the differences depending on the gender, and the intimacy of the speaker and listener, and which responses they prefer when refusing or being refused from a dating request to look into the various aspects of refusal speech acts and linguistic practices of present-day college students.
