김치진(金致振, 1822~1869)의 『척사론(斥邪論)』은 현존하는 조선의 서학비판서 중 유일하게 서교(西敎)를 체계적으로 연구한 단일 저작으로, 전체 분량은 240쪽에 달한다. 그것은 총 30여 항목에 걸쳐 서학의 주요 쟁점을 조목별로 분석하고 비판하는데, 분량과 구성, 주제의 다양성 측면에서 가장 완성도 높은 저작이라고 말할 수 있다. 그럼에도 현재까지 『척사론』은 필사본 형태로만 존재하고 있으며 저자와 저술 목적, 편집 구성의 특징을 소개한 연구로는 차기진의 짧은 해제 이후 노대환의 논문이 거의 유일하다. 서학서의 열람이 금지되고 교인이 산간벽지로 숨어들어 외부인이 서교의 실체를 파악하기 어려워진 상황에서, 김치진은 서학서를 연구하여 그 허점을 드러내야만 교인을 설득하여 정도(正道)로 계도할 수 있다고 믿었다. 이러한 믿음 위에서 그는 천주교 공동체에 잠입한 뒤 정보를 수집하여 『척사론』을 저술하였고, 주변에서 자신에게 쏟아내는 이단의 혐의와 비방에 맞서 그 당위성을 주장하였다. 실제로 그는 서학서의 열람과 교인과의 대화를 통해 그 내용과 실정을 파악하였고, 수집한 정보를 토대로 효과적인 근본책과 보완책을 다각도에서 마련하였다. 본고는 금년 상반기에 출간될 역주본 『척사론』을 열람할 독자의 이해를 돕기 위한 목적으로 기획된 것으로, 본문은 총 네 장으로 구성되었다. 2장에서는 국내에서 확인된 판본의 서지를 소개하고 그들 사이의 구성과 내용상의 동이(同異)를 점검한 다음, 그 완성도를 기준으로 저본과 대조본으로 구별했음을 논의하였다. 3장에서는 『척사론』의 저술 시기와 목적을 분석하고, 4장에서는 기존 연구성과에 기초하여 『척사론』의 구성과 항목의 주요 내용을 설명·보완하였다. 이어서 5장에서는 『척사론』이 조선 후기의 지식계에 미친 영향과 그 의의를 간략히 정리하였다. 마지막 6장에서는 결론을 대신하여 남은 후속 과제를 제시하였다.
Kim Chijin(1822-1869)'s Theory of Wickedness Expulsion is the only book that has been written in the book of Catholicism that has systematically studied Catholicism, and its total volume is almost 240 pages. It analyzes and criticizes major Catholic issues in a total of nearly 30 chapters, but it is the most complete work in terms of volume, composition, and diversity of subjects. Despite its completeness in terms of volume, composition, and diversity of subjects, the Theory of Wickedness Expulsion exists only in the form of a transcript. No Daehwan's thesis is one of the few studies that introduces the author, the purpose of writing, and the composition of editing. This paper was designed to deepen the reader's understanding of translation and annotation version of Theory of Wickedness Expulsion, which will be published in the first half of next year. This paper consists of four main chapters. Chapter 2 introduces the bibliography of manuscripts identified in Korea, examines the same points and differences in composition and content between them, and discusses the distinction between bottom manuscript comparative manuscripts based on their completeness. Chapter 3 analyzed the period of writing and the purpose of writing. Chapter 4 explained and supplemented the composition and main contents of the topic based on existing research results. Subsequently, and Chapter 5 briefly summarized the influence and significance of Theory of Wickedness Expulsion on Confucian intellectuals in the late Joseon Period. The last Chapter 6 introduced the remaining follow-up tasks instead of conclusions.
