태안의 역사는 지리적 특성과 그 공간에서 결합되고 분해되었던 인간의 활동이 집합된 양상을 보여준다. 태안읍성의 위상 변화, 안흥진성의 가치 부여 등은 시대별로 지리적 특성을 토대로 주장된 인간들의 다양한 선택의 하나였다. 조선시대의 태안은 왕조 초기부터 국왕과 관료 등이 주목하고 지역 현안을 국가 정책으로 해결하고자 한 곳이다. 물론 왕조시대에 어느 지역이나 주목받았다고 볼 수도 있으나, 태안의 연해처럼 국가의 조운선과 선박들이 고초를 당하거나, 외적의 침략로가 접해 있는 경우는 흔치 않다. 최근에도 태안 연해의 치패된 선박에서 고려시대 유물이 대거 발견되었듯이 천년이 넘는 역사의 흔적이 현재에도 지속되고 있다. 태안은 과거와 현재가 동일 공간에 잠재된 것 같은 역사적 성격을 보여준다.

Just as many relics from the Goryeo Dynasty were recently discovered in wrecked ships off the coast of Taean, it can be seen that traces of over a thousand years of history are still continuing today. Taean is a geographical space where the past and the present seem to be latent in the same space.
