지난 2021년은 가히 NFT(Non-fungible Token: 대체불가능토큰)의 해였다. NFT에 대한 관심이 촉발될수 있었던 이유는 대체불가능하다는 특성 때문이었다. NFT가 접목된 유·무형 자산은 블록체인에 의해고윳값을 부여받으므로 다른 자산과 교환이 불가능하다. 더불어 자산의 소유권이 블록체인 상에 저장되므로 위조 및 변조가 방지된다. 이와 같은 NFT의 특성은 콘텐츠 산업에 새로운 자극과 변화로 작용하고있다. NFT는 콘텐츠의 원본 인증서이자 소유권 증명서로서 이용될 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 원본 및 부가콘텐츠의 가치를 극대화하는 용도로 사용될 수 있다. 이러한 연유로 콘텐츠 산업 종사자들은 NFT를 적극활용하려 시도하고 있다. 본 연구는 이와 같은 동향을 포착하여 콘텐츠 IP를 확장하는 데 있어 NFT의활용 가능성을 탐색하고자 IP의 원천 콘텐츠 유형별NFT 활용 사례를 분석했다. 이를 통해 NFT가 영상, 만화, 음악, 게임 콘텐츠 등 다방면에서 효과적인 IP 확장 방안으로 이용되고 있음이 확인되었다. 특히NFT가 팬들에게 새로운 경험을 제공함으로써 팬 커뮤니티를 강화하는 역할을 하고 있음이 눈길을 끌었다. NFT는 전시회부터 수익화의 기회까지 콘텐츠 향유 방식을 다양화하여 사양되어 가던 콘텐츠에 새로운 가치를 부여하거나 소구층을 넓히는 방식으로 IP 확장에 기여한다. 비록 콘텐츠 IP 확장에 있어 NFT가신전략으로서 주목받고 있으나, 그 시장과 관련 연구가 양적·질적인 면에서 성숙하지 않은 상황이기에NFT의 효용성을 발견해내는 지속적인 후속 연구가필요할 것이다. 향후 활성화가 기대되는 콘텐츠 산업내 NFT 활용 및 관련 연구에 있어 본 논문이 마중물이 될 수 있기를 희망한다.
2021 was the year when NFTs moved away from being niche entities and were embraced by the masses. The reason behind the population of NFTs these days lies in that it is irreplaceable. Blockchain technology provides tangible and intangible assets incorporated with NFTs with unique values, so that they cannot be traded or exchanged at equivalency. In addition, NFTs are capable of effectively preventing forgery and alteration since NFTs assign or claim ownership of an asset using blockchain. These characteristics of NFTs act as new stimuli in driving changes in the content industry. Therefore, the content industry practitioners are actively attempting to utilize NFTs in expanding content IP. Capturing these trends, this study analyzed representative cases using NFTs by source content type of IP to explore the possibility of using NFTs in expanding content IP. It was confirmed that NFTs are being used as an effective method for IP expansion in various types of content such as video, comics, music, and game. In particular, it drew attention that NFTs are playing a role in strengthening the fan community by providing new experiences to fans. NFTs contribute to IP expansion by diversifying the method of enjoying content from exhibitions to opportunities for monetization, giving new value to content in decline or expanding its appeal base. Although NFTs are in the spotlight as a new business strategy, the market and related research still need to become mature in terms of quantity and quality. Thus, continuous follow-up studies to explore the meaningful value of NFTs will be needed. It is hoped that this paper can contribute to activating NFTs application and related research in the content industry.
