본 연구의 목적은 20세기 초 서구 유럽의 전체주의와 파시즘 그리고 나치 정권하에서 ‘정치적 신화’의 출현과 전개 그리고 변용 과정을 카시러의 시선에서 명료하게 분석해내고 그 의미를 살펴보는 데 있다. 카시러는 파시즘과 같은 유형의 현대 전체주의 국가는 ‘정치적 신화’를 통해서 인간의 의식과 삶을 정복한 것으로 파악하였다. 전체주의와 파시즘 체제의 국가가 그 동안 동원했거나 이용했던 정치적 신화는 ‘영웅숭배론’,‘인종불평등론’, ‘국가’ 이념, ‘운명론적 역사관’, ‘실존철학’이라고 카시러는 밝히고 있다. 이 글에서는 다섯 가지 정치적 신화 가운데 칼라일의 ‘영웅숭배론’에 국한하여 집중적으로 논의한다. 먼저 칼라일의 『영웅숭배론』에 나타나는 영웅, 영웅숭배, 영웅 정신이 무엇인지 구체적으로 텍스트를 발췌하여 분석한다. 그리고 칼라일의 『영웅숭배론』에 대한 카시러의 독해와 분석을 다룬다. 다음으로 칼라일의 이론과 역사관에 대한 카시러의 분석, 특히 괴테와 피히테 사상의 영향을 해명하였다. 또한 칼라일 사상과 파시즘 및 전체주의와는 직접적 관계가 없다는 사실을 규명한다. 마지막으로 현대인의 삶과 정치영역에서 정치적 신화는 사멸했는지를 밝히면서 논의를 마무리하였다.
This study focuses on totalitarianism and fascism, as well as on the appearance, development, and transformation of political myths in terms of Cassirer’s cultural politics. Cassirer insists that the contemporary states of totalitarianism as fascism have conquered human consciousness and life through political myths. Cassirer states that hero worship, the inequality of racism, the concept of the state, fatalism, and the philosophy of existence are important political myths. In this study, we will discuss Carlyle’s hero worship among political myths. First, we analyze the meanings of hero, hero worship, and the mentality of the hero through a textual analysis of Carlyle’s work. Second, we focus on Cassirer’s reading of Carlyle’s hero worship. Third, we elucidate the ideas of Goethe and Fichte as a background for Carlyle’s theory and a historical viewpoint. We will also analyze the relationship between Carlyle’s theory and totalitarianism and fascism. Finally, we will discuss the transformation of political myths in the context of the current political situation.
