Manufacture and management of firearms of the weapons manufacturing organization in the Joseon Dynasty

軍器寺는 조선 왕조의 군기를 제조 및 보급하던 병조 산하의 독립 기관이다. 국가의 武庫라고 불리던 중앙 정부 산하의 병기창이었다. 군기시의 대표 무기는 화기였다. 조선 전기부터 군인 양성에 화기의 운영을 제일로 삼았을 정도로 주요 병기가 화기였다. 여말선초부터 국방의 전략 강화라는 차원에서 화기라는 신문물을 수용하던 자세는 왜란으로 이어져 조선 후기의 새로운 화기 체제를 구축하는 계기가 된다. 그런데 임진왜란으로 군기시의 기능이 저하되고 신설된 군영들이 그 기능을 점유해 가면서 역할이 축소되었다. 군기시가 전쟁의 양상을 전환시키고 침략군을 상대하기 위해 대응 양상을 변화시킨 것은 필수적이었으며, 그 하나가 군영에서 무기를 제작하게 한 것이다. 특히 군기시의 주력 무기인 화기의 제작이 확대되게 된 계기였다. 군기시의 화기는 시대별로 변화상을 지니고 있으며, 당대의 적합한 군사 전략에 부합하여 신무기를 도입하거나 개량된 체제로 전환하였다. 왕조 국가 국방의 중추적 연구 기관이며 핵심 무기 기술의 발상지라는 점에서 주목받던 기관이다. 조선 왕조가 문무를 겸비하면서 국방의 강화와 군사력 향상을 위해 지속적으로 노력한 결과가 군기시의 활약이라고 할 수 있으며, 그 성과의 하나가 화기라고 할 수 있다.

Gungisi is a national institution that manufactured and supplied military weapons of the Joseon Dynasty. It was an organization under the central government called the military armory of the state. Gungisi’s representative weapon was firearms. Since the early Joseon Dynasty, the main weapon was firearms, to the extent that firearms management was the top priority in training soldiers. The tendency to accept the new firearms from the end of Goryeo and the early Joseon Dynasty in terms of strengthening national defense strategy led to the Japanese invasion, which served as an opportunity to establish a new firearms system in the late Joseon Dynasty. However, as the function of Gungisi deteriorated due to the Japanese Invasion of Joseon Dynasty in 1592 and newly established military garrison occupied that function, its role was reduced. It was essential that Gungisi changed the aspect of warfare and changed the response to deal with the invading army, and one of them was to make weapons in military garrison. In particular, it was an opportunity to expand the production of firearms, the main weapon of Gungisi. The firearms of Gungisi had changes according to the times, and new weapons were introduced or converted to improved systems in accordance with the military strategy appropriate for the time. It is a pivotal research institute for the national defense of the dynasty and has always attracted attention as it is the birthplace of core weapon technology. The result of the Joseon Dynasty’s continuous efforts to strengthen national defense and improve military power while combining civility and martial arts can be said to be the activity of Gungisi, and one of its achievements can be said to be firearms.
