이 연구는 한국양명학사에 대한 기존 연구 성과를 분석하고, 그 주요 연구 주제와 연구 방법을 고찰한 것이다. 이 연구에서 우리는 한국양명학사에 대한 기존 연구 성과 가운데 특별히 정인보, 이능화, 고교형, 윤남한, 유명종 등의 연구에 주목하였다. 이들은 한국양명학사에 대한 연구 관점을 비교적 뚜렷하게 제시하고 있으며, 또 그들의 연구 성과는 양명학 연구자들에게 적지 않은 영향을 끼치고 있다. 한국양명학사에 대한 체계적인 서술을 위해서, 다음과 같은 몇 가지 연구 주제와 연구 방법이 요구된다. 1) 한국양명학사에 대한 연구 관점을 수립할 필요가 있다. 2) 동아시아 양명학의 전개라는 시야에서 한국양명학의 특성과 의의를 규명할 필요가 있다. 3) 양명학의 정의와 양명학 수용 기준을 명료하게 제시할 필요가 있다. 4) 조선에서 양명학을 수용하고 비판하게 된 그 정치적･학술적 배경을 검토할 필요가 있다. 5) 한국양명학의 존재 양태와 전개 양상에 대한 체계적인 서술이 요구된다. 6) 유학은 수기치인, 혹은 내성외왕의 방법을 탐구하는 학문이요, 양명학도 유학의 한 형태라는 전제하에 한국양명학도 마음공부와 경세의 두 측면에서 조명할 필요가 있다. 7) 현재 우리가 직면한 현실 문제와의 연관 속에서 한국양명학의 의의를 조명할 필요가 있다. 8) 한국양명학 관련 자료에 대한 폭넓은 발굴과 수집이 필요하다.
This paper analyzes previous research on the history of Korean Yangming studies and examines their main research topics and methodologies. It particularly focuses on five scholars who presented crucial viewpoints on the history of Korean Yangming studies and therefore have exerted considerable influence on researchers working on Korean Yangming studies: Jeong In-bo, Lee Neung-hwa, Go Gyo-hyeong, Yoon Nam-han, and Yu Myeong-jong. For a systematic approach to the history of Korean Yangming studies, several research topics and methodologies are required as follows. 1) Establishing a proper research perspective on the history of Korean Yangming studies. 2) Clarifying the characteristics and significance of Korean Yangming studies from the perspective of the development of East Asian Yangming studies. 3) Presenting a clear definition of Yangming studies and objective criteria to determine whether someone is influenced by Yangming studies. 4) Examining the political and academic background that led to accepting and criticizing Yangming studies in Joseon. 5) Elucidating how Korean Yangming studies was initiated and evolved. 6) Illuminating the characteristics of Korean Yangming studies in regard to cultivating the mind and governing the state: the two main tasks of Confucianism in pursuit of inner sageliness and outer kingliness. 7) Clarifying the significance of Korean Yangming studies in relation to the contemporary issues we are facing today. 8) Exploring a wide range of unknown materials on Korean Yangming studies and arranging them.
