탈 노동사회의 전망은 사실과 당위의 두 측면 모두에서 제기되어 왔다. 그렇지만 성장론과 희소성의 경제에 뿌리를 둔 노동중심주의는 여전히 견고하다. 실체 여부에 대한 논란이 있지만 소위 ‘제4차 산업혁명’은 탈 노동 사회에 대한 대안 마련 필요성을 다시금 환기하고 있다. 한나 아렌트는 『인간의 조건』(1958)을 통해 근대 사회가 노동생산성의 고도화와 자동화의 진전으로 인해 오랜 숙원이었던 노동의 속박으로부터 벗어날 수 있는 국면(stage)에 진입했다는 현실 인식을 내놓는다. 그렇지만 노동으로부터 자유가 삶의 자유로 이어지지는 않는다고 단언한다. 그는 고대 그리스적 의미에 따라 노동, 작업, 행위를 구분하고 정치 참여를 의미하는 행위의 회복을 통해서야 비로소 자유로운 삶, 혹은 삶의 자유가 얻어질 수 있다고 주장한다. 노동중심주의가 여전히 견고한 현실에서 이의 지양을 주장한 그의 통찰은 선구적인 측면을 지닌다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그의 예측이자 그의 이론의 전제인 노동으로부터의 자유는 여전히 과제이자 지향이라는 점, 그의 전제(예측)를 받아들이더라도 노동의 자유로부터 삶의 자유로 나아가야한다는 당위적 방향을 제시할 뿐 방법을 제시하지 못한 한계를 지적하고자 한다. 끝으로 노동으로부터의 자유와 삶의 자유로 나아가는 매개적 방법으로서기본소득의 도입을 제안하고자 한다.
The prospect of a post-labor society has been raised from both the facts(Sein) and the oughts(Sollen). However, labor-centrism, rooted in growth supremacy and an economy of scarcity, remains strong. Although there are controversies over whether it is a reality, the so-called ‘fourth industrial revolution’ reminds us of the need to come up with an alternative to a post-labor society. Hannah Arendt, through 『The Human Condition』 (1958), presents the realization that modern society has entered a stage where it can be freed from the long bondage of labor due to the advancement of labor productivity and automation. But she asserts that freedom from labor does not lead to freedom of life. She classifies labor, work, and action according to the ancient Greek meaning, and argues that a free life or freedom of life can be obtained only through restoration of the action, which means participation in politics. In reality, labor-centrism remains firm. In this situation, her insight to argue for its abolition has a pioneering aspect. However, freedom from labor, the premise of her predictions and theories, is still a task and direction, not a reality. I would like to point out her limitations in not offering a way to freedom from labor. Finally, I would like to propose the introduction of universal basic income as a mediating way to freedom from labor and freedom of life.
