This paper aims to investigate linguistic characteristics of Hangeul letters of Queen Jeongsun(貞純王后) and her famaly which are preserved in National Hangeul Museum. This document consists of letters of Queen Jeongsun and her nephews, Kim Noseo(金魯恕) and Kim Nochung(金魯忠) in the late-18th and the early-19th century. Since first introduced to the public in 2014, this document has been decoded and translated into contemporary Korean, and the content and historical background have been revealed through several papers. However, there have been no studies considered in terms of Korean linguistics yet. In this paper, I will examine linguistic characteristics of Hangeul letters of Queen Jeongsun. Through this study, it is expected to observe linguistic characteristics of royal and noblemen families in the late-18th and the early-19th centuries. In this paper, I will review and organize the bibliography of the letters, i.e., when it was written, the author, the content, and the interrelationship (Ch. 2); examine its orthographic, phonological, morphological and syntactic characteristics (Ch. 3-5) and show the formalities and the unique expressions found in Hangeul letters (Ch. 6). In conclusion, this document generally reflects the linguistic characteristics of Late Modern Korean; but on the other hand, it shows very conservative aspects that adhere to the previous language forms. This can be interpreted as a special feature of a certain class, the royal family and noblemen, or the cause can be found in the confusion or generation gap that occurs during the process of change.
