한국의 장로교선교역사에 있어서 위대한 업적을 이룬 두 선교사는 한국 선교정책과 방법을 놓고 네 번에 걸쳐 심한 분쟁과 갈등, 그리고 의견의 충돌이 있었다. 이 분쟁과 갈등은 단순히 언더우드와 마펫 두 선교사만의 싸움이 아니라, 서울선교지부와 평양선교지부가 한국선교를 놓고 벌인 주도권 다툼이기도 하였다. 특히 1890년대 초반부터 1900년대 초까지 두 번에 걸쳐 벌어진 분쟁과 갈등은 선교사들의 행동양식의 서로 다른 의견대립이었을 뿐만 아니라 한국선교전략 수립에 지대한 영향을 미친 사건이기도 하였다. 본 논문은 언더우드와 마펫 선교사 사이에 벌어진 분쟁과 갈등을 고찰하고, 그 갈등의 원인을 신학적으로 분석하고자 한다. 특히 1890년대 초반부터 1900년대 초에 벌어진 두 논쟁, 즉 ‘찬송가 발행 문제’와 ‘신문 문제’를 중점적으로 다루고자 한다. 그 이유는 이 논쟁의 결과로 1900년대 이후 병원과 학교 등 기독교 기관들의 모습이 구체화하기 때문이다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 첫째로 언더우드와 마펫 그리고, 선교본부의 총무인 엘린우드 사이에 오고 간 선교편지와 보고서를 통해 분쟁과 갈등의 전개 과정을 구체적으로 제시하고자 한다. 둘째로 이를 통해 두 선교사 간의 갈등의 원인이 무엇인지 신학적으로 분석하고자 한다.
The two missionaries, who accomplished remarkable achievements in the history of Presbyterian missionary work in Korea, had four serious disputes, conflicts, and disagreements over the policies and methods of missionary work in Korea. This conflict was not only between Underwood and Moffett but was also a struggle for leadership between Seoul and Pyongyang mission stations. In particular, the conflicts that occurred twice from the early 1890s to the early 1900s were not only differences of opinion in the behavior of the missionaries but also an event that had a considerable influence on the establishment of missionary strategies in Korea. This thesis aims to examine the conflict between Underwood and Moffet and analyze the cause of the conflict theologically. Particularly, this thesis would like to focus on two controversies that took place from the early 1890s to the early 1900s, namely, the issue of hymns and newspaperpublication. Consequently, the appearance of Christian institutions, such as hospitals and schools after the 1900s, took shape. Therefore, this paper intends to present the process of conflict comprehensively through missionary letters and reports between Underwood, Moffet, and Ellinwood. Second, the cause of conflict between the two missionaries is theologically analyzed.
