문인의 글쓰기는 진정성이 담보되어야 독자에게 울림을 줄 수 있다. 그 진정성은 글쓰기의 진솔함에서 비롯된다. 굳이 공자식으로 이야기하면 ‘사무사(思無邪)’, 즉 생각에 사특함이 없는 글쓰기여야 함을 의미한다. 백철의 자서전은 해방된 지 30여 년이 지난 시점에 집필된다. 생의 반추, 혹은 정리라는 집필 의도가 자서전 쓰기의 본래 의도였겠지만 자서전 속의 문장들이 지시하는 바는 가볍게 넘길 수 없는 대목이 눈에 띈다. 즉 레토릭 속에는 치밀하게 계산된 문법이 작동하고 있음을 발견할 수 있다. 자신의 부끄러움을 미화하거나, 약화하거나, 숨기려는 의도가 깃들어 있는 것이다. 이 논문에서는 일제 암흑기와 해방기에 집중하여 백철의 자서전 속에 스며있는 의도를 읽어보려 한다. 일제와 관련하여서는 암흑기를 지나오는 동안에 보여준 백철의 처신에 초점을 맞춰 살펴볼 것이다. 그리고 해방기에는 친일에 대한 태도와 좌익문단을 바라보는 시선에 초점을 맞춰 자서전의 수사학이 만들어내는 의미를 분석해보려 한다. 그렇게 함으로써 백철의 자서전 속에 담겨 있는 역사적 감각과 그것을 풀어내는 방식의 특징을 확인하게 될 것이다.
A writer's writing can resonate with the reader only when authenticity is guaranteed. The authenticity comes from the sincerity of writing. If you say it in the way of Confucius, it means that it should be a writing that has no privacy in thought. Baek Cheol's autobiography is written more than 30 years after liberation. Although the intention of writing life's reflection, or organization, was the original intention of writing an autobiography, what the sentences say in the autobiography are not easily overlooked, i.e., you can find that meticulously calculated grammar is working in the literal. It is intended to glorify, weaken, or hide one's shame. In this paper, I will focus on the Japanese dark and liberation periods and read the intentions permeated in Baek Cheol's autobiography. Regarding the Japanese colonial rule, we will focus on Baek Cheol's behavior during the dark ages. In addition, during the liberation period, we will analyze the meaning created by the rhetoric of autobiography, focusing on the attitude toward pro-Japanese and the view of left-wing literature. In doing so, Baek Chul's autobiography will confirm the historical sense and the characteristics of the way it is solved.
