西州 曺夏望(1682~1747)은 肅宗朝와 英祖朝에 걸쳐 활동한 조선 후기의 문신이다. 1711년 進士試에 壯元及第하여 문학적 역량을 인정받았다. 1734년 경 결성된 西泉梅花社라는 詩社에서 중심인물로 활동한 바 있다. 1742년 江陵府使로 부임하여 鏡浦臺를 중수하고 上樑文을 지었는데, 뛰어난 문장으로 인구에 회자되었다. 1746년 寧越府使로 전임하였다가 병으로 사퇴하고 驪州로 돌아와 요양하다가 생을 마쳤다. 문집으로는 1826년 申綽이 편차하고 1854년 고손자 曺錫雨가 간행한 『西州集』이 전한다. 총 11권 중 권2, 권3, 권4에 시가 실려 있다. 권2에 「模擬錄」, 「軟香錄」, 「菟裘錄」, 「龜城塤唱錄」, 권3에 「西遊錄」, 「南征錄」, 「龍蛇錄」, 「宜城錄」, 「梅社酬唱錄」, 「赤城錄」, 「嶽海錄」, 「臨瀛錄」, 「會稽錄」, 권4에 「傷悼錄」이 편차되어 있다. 「模擬錄」에 실린 <相逢行>, <靑樓曲>, 「軟香錄」에 실린 <赤城倅朴季良師漢別語>, 「菟裘錄」에 실린 <任士強用杜韻寄來, 依韻却寄>, 「臨瀛錄」에 실린 <鏡浦㙜>, 「會稽錄」에 실린 <越山志感> 등 6수가 『大東詩選』에 선입되어 후대의 高評을 받았다. <鏡浦㙜>는 특히 높이 평가를 받아 鏡浦臺와 大關嶺을 노래한 역대의 훌륭한 작품 가운데 한 편으로 선정되기도 하였다. 1746년에서 1748년 사이 江原道觀察使 金尙星이 주관하여 十境圖와 66수의 題詠詩를 合帖하여 엮은 『關東十境』에 조하망의 시 9수가 실려 있다. 두 수는 문집에 실리지 않았고, 여섯 수가 1739년 金剛山 유람 시기의 작품을 모은 「嶽海錄」에, 한 수가 「會稽錄」에 실려 있다.

Seoju(西州) Jo Ha-mang(曺夏望, 1682~1747) is a writer in the late Joseon Dynasty who was active throughout the Sukjong dynasty and Yeongjo dynasty. In 1711, he passed as senior in Jinsa examination, where his literary competence was recognized. He served as a central figure in a poetry company called Seocheonmahwasa(西泉梅花社) which was formed around 1734. In 1742, he was appointed as the governor of Kangreung(江陵), repaired the Kyeongpodae(鏡浦臺) and wrote the introduction. In 1746, he transferred to the governor of Yeongweol(寧越), but resigned due to illness. As his collection of literary works, Shin jak(申綽) deviated in 1826, and published in 1854 by his great-grandson Jo Seok-woo(曺錫雨), 『Seojujip(西州集)』 is reported. Out of a total of 11 volumes, Volume 2, Volume 3, and Volume 4 contain poems. Four poems including <sangbonghaeng(相逢行)> in Volume 2, Two poems including <Kyeongpodae> in Volume 3, were selected for the 『Daedongsiseon(大東詩選)』and received high praise from later generations. <Kyeongpodae> was particularly praised and was selected as one of the greatest works of all time that sang Kyeongpodae and Daekwanryeong(大關嶺). Nine poems by Jo Ha-mang are included in the 『Kwandongsipkyeong(關東十境)』, a compilation of poems, organized by Kim Sanh-seong(金尙星) between 1746 and 1748. Two numbers are not included in the collection of literature. Six numbers are listed in 「Haeakrok(嶽海錄)」, a collection of works from the visit to Mt. Geumgang in 1739. And one number is listed in 「Hoigyerok(会稽錄)」.
