이 논문은 1927년 『『중외일보』』에 발표된 김단정의 「괴적」의 번안 방식을 재론하는 것을 목표로 하였다. 그간 「괴적」은 전문(全文) 검토가 수행되지 않은 텍스트로, 구체적인 ‘번안’의 방식이 논의되지 않았다. 이 소설을 검토한 결과 전체 분량의 80%는 번역 주체가 재창작한 내용이었으며 후반부의 20%만이 원작의 전개를 따랐다. 이는 번안의 양면성을 관찰할 수 있는 사례로 판단된다. 원작에서 이탈하려는 원심력과 다시 원작에 이끌리는 구심력을 모두 관찰할 수 있었기 때문이다. 전반적으로 원작을 개의치 않는 전개 양상은 ‘번안’의 적극적인 성격을, 부분적으로 원작을 의식한 대목은 ‘번안’의 소극적인 성격으로 파악할 수 있다. 번역 주체인 김단정은 과감하게 원작을 해체하고 재구성하였다. 「괴적」은 『『지킬 박사와 하이드 씨』가 연극과 영화를 통해 여러 차례 각색된 것처럼 재탄생 신화의 연속성을 파악할 수 있는 사례가 된다. 내용 면에서는 시공간을 재맥락화한 점이 주요했다. 식민지 조선을 배경으로 삼아 자본주의 사회 구조에 대한 문제의식을 표출하였고 ‘재산’의 축적 과정과 이를 강탈하는 악인의 형상이 묘사되었다. 형사와 악인의 육박전, 미행, 희생자 구출, 추적 중심의 서사 등의 요소는 범죄소설로서의 면모를 보여줬다. 이로써 「괴적」은 『『지킬 박사와 하이드 씨』에서 영감을 받아 재창작한, 다시쓰기 소설로 부를 수 있다.
This thesis aimed to re-discuss the method of adaptation of Kim Dan-Jeong’s “The Strange Thief(Goejeok)” published in Joongoe-ilbo in 1927. Until now, “The Strange Thief(Goejeok)” is a text that has not been reviewed in its entirety, and the specific method of the ‘adaptation’ has not been discussed. As a result of reviewing this novel, 80% of the total volume was re-created by the translator, and only 20% of the second half followed the development of the original. This is judged to be a case in which the duality of the adaptation can be observed. This is because both the centrifugal force to deviate from the original work and the centripetal force to be drawn back to the original work could be observed. Overall, the development pattern that does not care about the original story can be understood as the active character of the ‘adaptation’, and the part conscious of the original version can be understood as the passive character of the ‘adaptation’. Translator Kim Dan-Jeong boldly dismantled and reconstructed the original. “The Strange Thief(Goejeok)” is an example of the continuity of rebirth, just as Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde has been adapted several times through plays and movies. In terms of content, it was important to recontextualize time and space. With colonial Joseon as the background, he expressed a sense of problem about the structure of capitalist society, and the process of accumulating ‘property’ and the image of a villain usurping it were depicted. The elements such as the close combat between the detective and the villain, the chase, the rescue of the victims, and the chase-centered narrative showed the aspect of a crime novel. In this way, “The Strange Thief(Goejeok)” can be called a ‘Rewriting novel’ inspired by Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
