이 연구는 탈진실 정치의 부상이 인권침해 피해자의 사회적 고통을 다루는 연구와 실천에 제기한 방법론적 도전을 직시하고, 대안적인 메타이론과 질적 연구방법론의 결합 가능성을 모색한다. 실증주의 패러다임에 대한 유력한 비판을 발전시켜 온 비판적 실재론의 메타이론적 관점이 인권침해 피해자의 트라우마를 다루는 질적 연구방법론의 발전에 기여할 수 있는 지점은 크게 세 가지다. 첫째, 경험적 규칙성에 기초한 실증주의적 인과성 개념과 달리 비판적 실재론이 기초한 발생적 인과성은 집단트라우마를 야기한 인과기제와 발생적 과정에 대한 탐구를 정당하게 허용한다. 둘째, 비판적 실재론의 층화된 실재 개념과 공시 발현적 힘의 유물론은 정신-신체/이유-원인 이분법과 환원주의적 트라우마 연구의 편향을 넘어설 존재론적 관점을 제공한다. 셋째, 가추와 역행추론에 중심을 둔 비판적 실재론의 추론 방법은 존재론적 성찰에 기초해 다양한 방법들의 유연한 결합을 촉진한다. 이러한 방법들의 결합은 정신현상에 대한 사회과학적 설명과 사회이론적 비판, 나아가 사회정책적 개입을 통합하는 비판 실재론적 질적 연구의 가능성을 열어놓는다. 이 연구는 5.18 목격자의 집단트우마에 대한 생애사 접근법과 근거이론 접근법을 혼합한 질적 사례연구에 기초해 이러한 가능성을 예시해보고자 하였다.
This study examines the methodological challenges that the rise of the post-truth politics has caused to research and practice dealing with social suffering in victims of human right violations, and sought the compatibility of the alternative meta theory and qualitative research methodology. There are mainly three points where the meta theoretical perspective of critical realism can contribute to the development of the qualitative research methodology that deals with the trauma of victims of human right violations. First, unlike the concept of positivist causality based on empirical regularity, generative causality on which critical realism is based allows the validity of exploration on causal mechanisms and generative processes that have brought about collective trauma. Second, the concept of stratified reality and the synchronic emergent powers materialism suggest the ontological perspective that goes beyond the bias of mind-body/reason-cause dichotomy and reductionist trauma studies. Third, the reasoning method of critical realism focusing on abduction and retroduction facilitates the flexible combination of various methods through ontological reflections. Such mixed methods provide the possibility of critical realist qualitative researches to integrate social scientific explanations, social theoretical critique, and furthermore, social policy interventions regarding mental phenomenon. This study intends to illustrate such possibility through case studies on the collective trauma of in Witnesses of the May 18th Democratic Uprising.
