A Study on the Large Space Architecture of Government and Public Secondary Education Facilities before 1925 : For Pupil Waiting Hall and Gymnasium in Middle School

일본에서 생도공소, 강당, 우천체조장 순으로 등장한 대공간은 식민지 조선에 비교적 동시에 등장하였다. 1910년대 근대교육시설이 식민지 조선에 도입될 때는 생도공소와 강당, 우천체조장의 필요성에 대한 인식이 일본 내에서 이미 완성이 된 후였기 때문에, 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 단계적으로 도입되었던 일본과 달리 식민지 조선에서는 대공간이 필요에 의해 최대 3개까지 비교적 동시에 지어진다. 한편, 조선교육령에 의한 당시 교육제도는 대공간의 설치에 영향을 주었다. 이에 따라 설치된 생도공소, 강당, 우천체조장은 건축적 기능이 명확히 분리된 공간으로 계획되었다. 또한, 각 대공간의 건축적 특성과 서로 다른 기능은 배치와 평면 계획에 영향을 끼쳤다.

This study researches Pupil Waiting Hall･Auditoriums･Gymnasium of Government and Public Secondary Education Facilities in Korea in the 1920s. Their short side widths are longer than the short side widths 10m(33尺) of school building which is the sum of the corridor and classroom widths of government and public secondary education facilities built during the Japanese colonial period, and the planned purpose of each building is clear. It has not attract the attention relatively in the study of modern school architecture in Korea up to now but this study intends to analyze the architectural characteristics of Pupil Waiting Hall, Auditoriums, Gymnasium based on the drawing of National Archive of Korea, and to research its function based on official gazette and various literature of the Japanese Government-General of Korea and the Japanese colonial government. To this end, this study reviews the large space of Government and Public Secondary Education Facilities along with the education system of modern school in the 1920s, and seeks to understand the large space which is changing with the revised educational system according to the flow of time. The reason why Pupil Waiting Hall, Auditoriums, Gymnasium were created separately in the secondary education facilities was the independent function of each space. Upon the introduction of modern education facility in Korean peninsular, Pupil Waiting Hall, Auditoriums, Gymnasium appeared together. However, since the 1930s, the importance of moral education and gymnastic further increased, each school tried to secure Auditoriums and Gymnasium. It appeared with the combined type in the newly built schools. Pupil Waiting Hall of which function got vague among them, was used as Auditoriums or Gymnasium only.
